This is also one of my favorite posts here. I was smiling the minute I saw the teaser picture.

I agree with the suggestions to start packing as soon as you know you are moving and to purge/donate what you no longer need. I've moved A LOT and the kitchen is always the most time consuming because most things have to be wrapped up and carefully packed. I always pack glassware and stemware first, and then mostly everything else in the kitchen, leaving only a couple of pans, dishes and utensils for my use.

I'd also suggest craigslist or freecycle for free moving boxes, that you can then pass on to others after your move.

And regarding movers, I tried to use them for the first time for my move two weeks ago, but the companies I called were quoting me between $950 to $1,000 to move me from a small one-bedroom to a studio. Although it was an in-state, 30-mile move, I still thought the price was outrageous and ended up going with my old standby: friends and a U-Haul. Total cost, including dinner for my friends: around $180.

I watch all of them -- Hoarders, Hoarding: Buried Alive, How Clean is Your House?, and Clean House .... and every time I am spurred to clean or tidy up as I watch them! I also end up putting stuff aside to donate. The conditions of the homes on these shows works as a scare tactic for me.

I agree with ngnerd about How Clean is Your House?, they always zoom into filthy toilets and then show you a up-close shot of the rag they used to clean them up. So gross.

When a potential landlord took too long to check on an application I had filled out, I was forced to go with another apartment. I asked the potential landlord to mail me back my application, since I had already rented elsewhere. He did, but who's to say he didn't photocopy it? I think about that sometimes, but all I can do is keep an eye on my credit reports.

Thanks for posting this because it's something I've always thought about. I now tell potential landlords that I don't want to give my SSN, and most are understanding.

It's amazing that with all that white, neon, and some natural light, the place still looks dark -- but that may speak more about the photography than what the house may look like in reality.

I think the child's room works, but the rest is too sterile for my taste.

I've put my poor cat through numerous moves and found that scooping the litter box clean, but not emptying and disinfecting it, works great on move-in day in the middle of all the chaos. That gives her a familiar scent and spot in a new unfamiliar place, which I'm sure she appreciates because the more nervous she is, the more she goes.

I also put out her bed, water and food dishes out immediately.

And your dog is adorable!

@flixbix: I completely agree about the chair. It was the first thing I thought of when I saw it.

I don't mind the pink on the walls but for some reason I do on the stairs. I agree the sofa pillows are dated. And the canopy seems too 'Little Shop of Horrors' for me, but the rest isn't bad.

This is a great idea. I lived in an apartment nearby a restaurant/bar/nightclub (the nightclub portion was added after I'd been living there and, thankfully, toward the end of my lease) and the bass was ridiculously loud. The establishment, especially during day time hours, operates as a restaurant/bar, with no hint that it is also a nightclub. The only way someone moving to the area would know about it, other than asking around, would be to drive by at night and hear the loud music.

I framed a promotional poster of Norman Rockwell's "Gossip" painting, which was used to advertise a 1997 exhibit. I think it's such a fun print.
