I think it would look great with some/all of the walls/ceilings painted but I don't have any insight into the technicalities of doing that. I'll be interested to see what the other posters come up with!

What about throwing one of these cheapie sheep skins over the chair? I think it would look best just thrown over it, but I bet there is a way to add a few ties or loops so that it wouldn't slide around. Would be fuzzy and warm, and add a little bit of cushion.

Beautiful room, but it kind of reminds me of a hotel. I think it's the somewhat neutral abstract art + gray walls. I'd take down the art and get a big, striking photo...something that reflects your personality.

20x200 is a great source for affordable art, and they have some really beautiful and unique pictures that would spice up the room a lot.

What's Needed in This Room? Good Questions

I'm terrible about losing my keys in my own home. I come in and forget to take them out of my bag or pocket, or I put them down on some random table (or worse throw them on my bed.) The next morning I am in a panic because I know they're somewhere in the house (how else would I have gotten inside?!) but no where to be found. I've started making an effort to always put them in the same place...but I still forget...

I think you could totally pull off different cabinets. If you did them the same white as the wall it would probably have better flow...although the kitchen is so neutral colored, a pop of color could also be kind of interesting. Something open, used for displaying things like your wine collection and wine glasses, or interesting plates or something, would make it look like it was intentionally built as a different kind of cabinet- as opposed to something with doors, which might just look like a mismatched cabinet. Also, getting new hardware for your existing cabinets can be a cheap way to spruce them up.

Yeah, go with the floor pillows, they certainly don't count as "furniture" and if there's any gray area you can just insist they're for your bed and you just happen to be sitting on them. And don't ask permission ahead of time, college administrators love to say no (even when they don't really have grounds to).

I don't think I've ever seen fake canned goods. If you can't turn any up, you could try lining up empty mason jars or the like. I always see beautiful jars in antique and vintage shops (and ebay), you could start a collection with jars of different sizes, colors and textures.

Your project looks pretty straight forward, no weird shapes or tufting, etc. Reupholstering isn't hard, but can be a little fussy.

My aunt took a reupholstering class through an adult education class in her town. The class was cheap, maybe $100, and you brought your own project to do. Maybe you should look into doing something like that, so you can have some back up if things get hairy.

Firstly, do a serious purge. He needs to get rid of things too or your stuff will never fit in there. Be brutal. Get a cheap little scanner like a doxie and throw out all your papers. Your bf looks like he leaves stuff everywhere, so get storage with doors. That way, even if your armoire is a total mess inside, no one will see it. Does Ikea ship to Costa Rica? They have all kinds of cupboards of various sizes and depths. Also, if you can paint, you should. Not only will it look a lot brighter and cleaner, but it will also force you to move things around (hence re-evaluating how necessary they are).

When I moved into a tiny apartment, I scoured the "Organization" section of this website. It gave me a lot a great ideas, especially for hard to use spaces (like the back of a door or above the cabinets): http://www.apartmenttherapy.com/categories/organizing

In the Tenant's Bill of Rights for California, tenants are expected to inspect the premises before renting and avoid places with "inadequate lighting or insufficient electrical outlets." However, landlords are also required to provide "an electric system, including lighting, wiring, and equipment, in good working order."

If you have a reasonable, normal amount of things you want to plug in and you're having trouble dealing with a fire hazard extension cord, or keep short circuiting, you may be able to make a case that the electric system in your apartment does not qualify as being in "good working order" and pressure your landlord into installing another outlet. The language of these bill of rights varies from state to state, but I'd bet that no matter where you are, your landlord is required to provide electricity at some reasonable standard.

Oooof...Can you stay where you are? I work in a windowless office with a door and while I love the privacy (perfect for talking to yourself, lol), I really do think the lack of natural light has an effect on my mood. I get totally sir crazy in my little space and I think my attention span is less. I would kill (kill!) for a window like that one.

What about those hooks that are made to hang over the top of a door? I can't quite tell from the picture, but it looks like you might be able to hang something like that (or a modified version) on the metal piece on top left? Then you could keep things you don't use often (like the comforter) behind it, and hang some everyday items in front?

As someone who to too lazy to use clothes hangers all the time, I love having a bunch of hooks that I can throw whatever I've been wearing a lot at the moment onto. It's perfect for a couple sweaters, your PJs, a purse, a scarf or two, the umbrella that you can never find when you need it, etc...

@HHRI - Haha, you're so right.

I'm all for ditching the big boxy TV cabinets for something sleeker. But even if you're able to hang your TV up...what about the tv accessories? Most people these days probably have at least a DVR or cable box thing, and probably a DVD player too. Do these go on the floor? What about the wires?

I am all for having less stuff. But sometimes getting rid of a piece of furniture can create as many problems as it solves.

I have a Klippan and I love it. The slip cover does take a little fussing to get on right and some routine straightening once a week or so, I but love it anyway. It's worth it to me to have a couch that I can basically throw in the wash, or change the color for $100. It seats 3 people comfortably and is great for napping on. I also pitched the gross legs it came with and put different ones on, which I think made a big difference.

Another vote for the yellow door! New numbers and a new light are also relatively cheap ways to spruce it up. I'd also change the curtains in the front windows. Something white might be nice.

You are so right! My list had things on it like no carpet, high walkability score...and that was about it.

I accidentally ended up in an apartment with great light and it is so wonderful. I put some plants on my fire escape and I feel like I live in a garden.

Another thing I realized after the fact is that if you don't have a dishwasher, a garbage disposal is the most amazing thing. Seriously, in future places without a dishwasher, lack of disposal will be a 100% deal breaker for me.
