wow great reno. I still think you could do some salon style hanging with everything you've got on that lovely wall... maybe put them all in frames that are not consistent in size but maybe have the same color frame? You could hit a flea market for cheap frames and then paint them all white or all brown or all black or even the same color as the wall itself.

What IS that wall color anyhow? I am dying to use that in my kitchen and keep ending up with a 'macaroni and cheese' color that doesn't work.

Oddly enough that is the only wood paneling I've ever seen in a photo and liked. There's something about the high ceilings and airy-ness of the room that makes the wood walls enjoyable. I would be tempted to take some hints from the tv show Madmen and get some furniture from that era for that room. That said, if you just cannot stand it -- I've seen many stylist friends paint every thing white and it does work wonders. It sounds like it could run the risk of looking 'shabby chic' or country, but it looks surprisingly modern when your done painting.

Maybe I'm liking your wood walls because I just saw this home in Met Home mag of April 09:

where do you live? I just recently saw a sign posted in a co-op garden that indicated that feeding squirrels is 'against NYC law' and I was curious to know more about that, as there seems to be one crazy senior per block that loves to feed these vermon and keep them fat!

Otherwise - we did note that the mint plants were the only ones that squirrels wouldn't eat. I later heard (on Car Talk Radio of all places) that mixing peppermint oil in water and spraying it on plants will keep squirrels away. Give it a try!

I don't know where the names Sayf and Shruti derive from, but there is something exquisite about how 'ethnic'ly minimal' this place is. I love it. It is spare yet lived in, and has someone's personal 'mark' to it so that it feels like there is something traditional or 'family' to each room.

sad to say... but there's not much you can do. My dad was a cop for 25 years and he said that domestic disputes are the touchiest and toughest for cops to even respond to. That said... you can keep an ear out for when drastic things happen and call police to respond. At least the abusive male will know that people around them will try to help.

I did once have the same thing occur when I lived downtown nyc - and I yelled things to the male bully in the relationship (from the safety of my window) trying to threaten him and it did nothing but escalate the situation. Then finally they (or just HE) moved out and the noise stopped. I hope that the same happens for you.

if you are in NYC you can get great industrial shelves made to size/order and offered in battle ship gray, white or red -- at Davids Office Equipment Inc 327 Canal St New York. I had an odd little nook that I had to use/fill so I went in with the measurements and paid maybe only $100 for a 9 foot high, 2 foot wide shelf - so pleased with them I also had another one created as a tv/media 'bench' for my wonky shaped living room.

The Ikea Lack shelf... turned on its side so that it's laying on the ground horizontally ... is the most wonderful kid's bookcase AND you can have it double as a train table/toy counter or put a cushion on it and kids can sit there and read!

hmmmm that's an interesting point about "too many chefs" . Now I see why it sometimes get a little 'dry' to see too many pieces at once. Does anyone know where the credenza (media stand of sorts) came from? I love that.

Jennah flip the Eames chair over and look for a Herman Miller furniture label... if it's there, you can probably sell it for a lot of cash or hold on to it as a valuable antique.

can I ask why someone doesn't create an affordable LARGER version of this - to use as a stackable media unit or shelves or credenza? I would love to find that somewhere... or invent it.
I mean look at it... I'm just dying to put a flat screen tv on top of it and then I realize it's the wrong scale.

another thought... all you have to do is lose your kid for a few minutes in a big department store and you'll have a different perspective on 'letting them run off.' That stressful lump in your throat mind-racing feeling that comes with "oh my god, someone could have taken my child". I don't think that feeling has changed in motherhood throughout time. There is a certain ideal time/age to let kids just 'run off' ... and a time to have a parent watch - from a distance - until they are a less vulnerable age. I have to question Sarahez's grandma's memory on how old Aunt Jill really was to walk down the street alone... I don't think I've ever known a 2 year old to know their way around like that. And focused enough to get somewhere??? I doubt this.
