Oh yeah--and sun pickles! Cucumbers in a jar filled with dill, salt and pepper, topped with a slice of bread, closed tight and put in the sun until pickled. :) not that crunchy, but very tasty.

My dad made chicken soup from scratch, and it always made the house smell fantastic. Although I don't eat meat anymore, I have fond memories of smelling the soup as it simmered on the stove while my dad lay on his back on the floor of the living room, having put too much stress on it while making the soup, apparently. He also used to make my sandwiches for school lunches with shapes like hearts and diamonds cut in the middle of them, which I would pop out and eat first.

Although I, too, continue to eat fish from the 'ok to eat' column; although I rarely cook it for myself.

In May 2008, after reading this

and this

and making a meatloaf that suddenly began to feel obscene in my hands and in my mind.

I concur with Joanna. I am happy to cook a pre-formed meat burger for my boyfriend every once in a while.

I was planning a roasted veggie quesedilla for last night but was too beat, so we ordered Indian food instead. Quesedillas will have to wait for tonight!

Matzo ball soup! I started some vegetable stock after breakfast yesterday and by lunchtime I had the (vegetarian) Jewish penicillin I was desperately in need of. Today I think I will make Pita bread and do something with butternut squash.

I got the smaller CD holder sized container and stored Wii games in it next to the TV; and then two of the larger sized containers are respectively on my dresser holding everything that used to be scattered over the top, and by my boyfriend's side of the bed holding his bedside reading and the bedside lamp. it looks so much more put together and neat!

As someone who was fortunate enough to leave behind my bad drinking habits when I moved out of my college town, Cheever's supposition of environment rings very true with me, but I know that for everyone it is different. Also, as someone working closely with addicts of all kinds, I hope that those whose behavior can change by a shift in social mores or environment do, and that those who can't will seek help elsewhere.

Unfortunately I've dealt with a similar situation; and continue to deal with it. My across the hall neighbors are a single mother with 2 young kids; the father of whom was drunk and violent one night months ago and was taken away by the cops at 3 am but only after pepper spray was unleashed in our communal stairwell and crept under our door. I don't intend on staying here for the long term. Even if this man is out of the house more often now, the kids are still loud and the mother equally so; and i overhear far more than i want to. I don't plan to make this my permanant home, sorry if you love your apartment; the cycle of abuse never lets up and unpleasantness will continue to happen.

I think that at least in Boston we call them "sticky buns". Tastes like croissant dough but they have pecans and are rolled with something buttery/mapley/honey ish. FANTASTIC from Clear Flour Bakery in Brookline.

I have always loved animals, but have only decided to become vegetarian four months ago at the age of 24 for primarily ethical reasons. I enjoy seeing animals cared for by responsible farms who have their best interests at heart. Knowing that they are destined for the table doesn't make me like seeing them less at all, but it makes me sad that this is not the standard of living for most of our nation's animals for consumption.
