I'm in the midst of a city search myself! I've lived in DFW, Atlanta, Manhattan, Raleigh/Durham and Washington DC. I was in NYC the longest amount of time, but after a dozen years (!) I knew I had to have more nature and some quiet. Raleigh/Durham was great, but there wasn't a great job for me so when an offer came for a great paying job in DC, I took it. There, I lived on Capitol Hill and loved it (mature trees, brick sidewalks, walk to cute shops and restaurants... Love!), but it is too pricey for me to buy and stay for good.

For me, I had to figure out my 5 top priorities for a hometown:
1) weather. I love being outside and poor weather brings out the real me... Couch Potato. I want to live somewhere that encourages me to stay outside. And a town "mentality" of healthy activities inspires me.
2) affordability. No need to elaborate here
3) people. I love places and people that are quirky, artsy, environmentally minded, friendly, and tolerant of others. Typically, politically liberal places suit me best. I'm not married, so meeting like minded people is important for me for new friends (and maybe a man!)
4) airport. I travel for a living. I don't need a city where I'll always have to travel with a layover, nor do I want a 45 minute commute home once I land... Humph

As an added caveat, my parents live in Dallas, finding a place somewhat close to them would be nice, but is not a deal breaker.

Here are my candidates:
1) Raleigh/Durham
1) Austin (tied for first)
2) Atlanta
3) Denver

Please let me know what you think!

What Do You Look for in a Hometown?

Great article! I travel a lot, so like you, I keep a toiletry bag packed. But i have mutiple bags. I have one for overnights (eye makeup remover wipes, travel toothbrush and paste, small moisturizer, tiny dry shampoo and hairclip, and mascara so I look a little refreshed in the a.m.) and a bag for weeklong trips (which includes everything I need including a travel hair dryer and tiny flat iron). I sometimes even keep that one in my suitcase ready to go!

Thanks for the other great ideas!
