I thought this ceiling solution looked like a good idea. Has anyone tried it?

Weird. Sounds like they are considering only policies LABELED green. How about per capita car use v. public transportation & walking? How about per capita square footage? (Yup, small cool, is usually more energy efficient since you aren't heating and cooling all that space).
How about detached houses vs. apartments and attached houses? Might the list come out differently if they included things like this?

Hi, the link in the first line, "house tour post," doesn't work.

I love the outbox in theory, but where do you put it if you are in a small apartment? For a while I tried under my desk, but that made the desk unusable. Now I trip over it! I guess I just have to suck it up until I finish decluttering, but it makes me irrationally mad at it as I have to manoeuvre around it (unfortunately, decluttering, for me, is not a fast process). Am I the only one?

Barbara,
I love Twenty-One Balloons! I thought I was the only one. The way that guy set up his little home in the balloon's gondola is inspiration to me for small, cool living.

It's called "Apartment THERAPY" not Apartment Smackdown, or Apartment Fight Club. I first started visiting this site years ago bc it was a relief from the more hostile & aggressive design sites. When the atmosphere gets mean, I find myself visiting a lot less. So to me it's more than just a disincentive to share, it's a turn off to read. I strongly agree with those that point out the difference between constructive suggestions and insults.

I'm really glad you are working to address this and steer it back towards a more helpful & supportive tone. Thank you!

Wende, that explains alot...when I first started seeing Moleskines around in the 90's I kept thinking, if they were in business all this time, how come I've only just started seeing them?

That said, they ARE really nice quality. I think of them as gift notebooks...hard to justify spending that much on a notebook for myself, but really nice to give as presents.

Looks great!

You've probably already checked this out, but just in case: parts of Greenpoint are situated over a major underground oil spill that happened long ago and never got cleaned up. I recommend you make sure you are not near the spill and that your soil is safe for growing food. If it isn't, I guess you could grow your veggies in containers?

"...hundreds of beautiful selzer bottles, some nearly 150 years old."

Paula-thanks for the link to the selzer delivery article. I knew the bottles were beautiful and old, but I didn't realize HOW old! This takes re-use to a whole new level.

I think these guys are the best choice for greenies who want fizzy water: local water (filtered NYC tap), no cartridges (carbonated at a plant in Brooklyn), re-used bottles, and just flat out cool.

I don't know if he goes to Manhattan, but there is still a selzer delivery guy in Brooklyn. He comes regularly to deliver more selzer and pick up the empties. The bottles are lovely old-school glass numbers, with the charger/spray nozzle thingy at the top..

No, unfortunately, I don't know this guy's name, I just admired his bottles at an aquaintance's house. Somebody must know how to find him?

Alan-propaganda or not, from a lighting design perspective, recent advances in compact fluorescents ARE different from the flickering overheads of old. For the good ones a) the human eye can't detect a flicker and b) they come in a range of color temperatures, including the same as incandescents.

AT: great plan! the more green info out there the better. And I second the suggestion that there be an emphasis on ideas that don't increase consumption, e.g., creative re-purposing of items we already have, etc.

I prefer the trash cans made to hold a grocery bag, like the one polkadot suggested above, because a simple frame wouldn't catch the drips that come through the not-unfrequent holes. (I try to check the bags before I re-use them, but I occasionally miss a hole).

Also, to those who use grocery bags for recycling: I thought in NYC we were required to use clear bags? I've ended up buying bags for my recycling. How odd is that?

I mentioned the "case study," not because of confusion about what it is (I'm a designer), but because it's a professional term. Non-professionals don't use their apartments to prepare for them for starting their own businesses (at least not in the sense you are talking about). The main appeal of this contest to me is seeing real-world, regular people's creative space solutions, and making them compete against professionally-designed spaces undermines that.

That said, looks like you do great work, and I like the way you approached the space and cost issues. And I appreciate your honesty. Good luck to you!

Great modifications, but doesn't yet look like a home. Are you done furnishing yet? Have you moved in yet?

Love the floating bar.

On the professional v. regular people controversy: I like seeing the professional stuff, but I agree that it's apples and oranges. How about leaving the contest to people (not firms and case-studies), but in addition to the regional categories adding a category for professional non-competing entries? That way, they get exposure, we get the fun of viewing it, but the contest doesn't feel so skewed.
