So my husband and I have an ongoing debate about whether crown molding will make our rooms look bigger, smaller, or the same. I think molding would make the rooms feel a bit bigger, if anything. We live in a rowhouse that was built in the early 50's so it isn't like I want to put crown molding into a modern-looking house. We have NARROW but pretty standard rectangular rooms. Thoughts?

Well, I have something to add on the $2,000 sofa front. I got a $4k sofa from Arhaus Furniture for $1600 because I bought a floor model. Granted, it is a lime green leather sofa (that I love, don't judge!) but if you find a sofa you love and it is too expensive, ask the salesperson if he/she is willing to sell the floor model.

I usually watch the BBC Pride and Prejudice, Jurassic Park, or Independence Day. Once I had a terrible flu and watched Wag the Dog about 5x in a row. I somehow still like that movie!

My friend's mom had the best trick ever. She would wheel the vacuum cleaner into the room right before guests got there and would say OH you caught me in the middle of cleaning! They inevitably just assumed she was in the middle of a cleaning flurry, thus the mess.

Hello! The bedframe is from Ikea (really from my aunt Jane but originally from Ikea) and the 3 tier basket was from In Watermelon Sugar, I believe! Our bathroom is a big pain because there is no storage, so that basket is kind of a lifesaver.

Hello! The throw pillow in the office is from ikea and the tree sculpture/ candelabra is from arhaus furniture. We actually used the tree sculptures as centerpieces for our wedding a few years back and I am still a big fan of them!

Hello all, homeowner here! Thank you for all the lovely comments! We certainly like living in our technicolor paradise so I am glad others like it too! As for the paint colors- the basement is Benjamin Moore calypso orange; the living room is Benjamin Moore silver half dollar; the dining room is grape green Benjamin Moore ; the kitchen is tricycle red Benjamin Moore; the hall is blue jay valspar; the office is gourd from Eddie Bauer valspar; the bedroom is Nordic blue from waverly valspar and the bathroom is vintage map from Martha Stewart valspar. My apologies if this formats funny, I am actually in Texas on my phone and I am none too skilled at typing!

The lampshade was from anthropologie in a sales bin a few years back (score!) and I am definitely a huge fan of cuckoo clocks! I got that one when I went to Germany in 6th grade. I scoured the countryside until I found one with a deer on it- an absolute must for a cuckoo clock in my book.

And yes, the evil cat was forgiven for ruining the couch so long as he doesn't lay a claw on the leather one! If he lays a claw on my leather couch though it will be catburgers for dinner...

Also, as far as the hemnes goes, it is a little rickety but it serves its purpose well. We originally had our china in it and it made me slightly nervous. We have had it 2 years and the base is a little chipped but otherwise it is holding together. I wanted to wallpaper the back of it but so far that is not on the top of my priorities list. The rugs in the living room and basement both are from a crate and barrel outlet that I am addicted to out in Leesburg VA.

I will do my best to answer questions so ask away! Thanks, AT for stopping by!!

Maybe it's just me but if you don't have a twin bed at home and you have to buy a comforter, blanket, sheets, etc., the Lacoste bed-in-a-bag doesn't seem that extravagant and looks pretty! I am sure you can get bedding cheaper but really, the bedding is one of the few design choices you really get to make in a dorm room, especially if the school is strict on hanging things. I had to get ALL new bedding and it adds up fast if you don't want to sleep on sandpaper sheets. Precious, precious sleep.

The most useful things I had in my dorm room were blankets (lots of them- it was cold in wet Portland, OR!), a mattress pad (one of those egg crate things sufficed), and a VERY reliable alarm clock. My friend's grandmother gave me one of those alarm clocks that projects the time on the ceiling and oh my god my roommate and I lived or died by its accuracy! Flip-flops for the shower are also very very useful. Floor cushions/throw pillows were also VERY handy for having people over to watch movies- much more comfortable than the bare carpets.

Essentials For Your First Dorm Room

In my first apartment, I had a giant light blue velvet couch. It was hideous and I LOVED it because it reminded me of Elvis and cost $5. Sometimes a sense of humor is absolutely essential.

What I did learn (and am still learning) is that sometimes it costs more to "fix" a cheap piece of furniture than it does to just buy a nice piece of furniture- especially if you are as handy/impatient as I am. I keep learning this the hard way. And no, it doesn't look better because of my hard effort. It looks like someone attacked the table/chair/lamp/whatever with spray paint and a staple gun (which is exactly what happened in most cases).

Lessons Learned from Your First Apartment

I have to say that I really like seeing other people's "first" places. My husband and I bought our first house last spring and I have already painted the living room three times! There is something about OWNING a house that has made me very nervous about going bold with style. I have no idea why that is but I am desperately trying to break out of that!

Seeing others successfully put a first home together is inspiring me. Maybe I will finally stick with a paint color.....

I have definitely moved a block over before. Our apartment had some serious issues (plumbing, animals, lack of locks- we were young and naive- never again!) as well as a terrible landlord so we hightailed it a block down the street. We couldn't have been happier!

HOWEVER! Prep like you are moving far away. We carried 3/4 of our stuff over without really packing it and it was a HUGE pain that we regretted about 2 hours into the process.

Growing up in Fort Worth, TX, the pest (aside from fire ants, scorpions, and snakes) that I hated the most was the asp- not the snake, rather these black fuzzy caterpillars that look all happy and nice until you touch them and realize that the "fuzz" is really a bunch of horrific spikes that embed themselves into your unassuming hand. My friend grabbed one that was hiding on the top of her trash can lid one morning- not pretty.

Lynn-Anne,
Your home looks lovely and inviting! It looks like the home I grew up in- full of fun, colorful curios of all shapes and sizes. If you don't watch out though, you may find that your kitchen and bathrooms have been, ahem, "borrowed" Carmen Sandiego-style :).

sometimes when i take the dog out to play fetch in the backyard, my cat sneaks out too. it is very scary for me when he does that! however, he is such a wimp that i sometimes let him wander around a bit before tossing him back inside. once our back door blew open while we were at the grocery store (don't ask, long story, bad lock) and my cat made it outside. we were gone for an hour. the farthest he made it was about 2 yards from the house. he was cowering on the ground and ran right over to me when we got back, wanting to be picked up and carried back inside. i love my little wimp :).

Having grown up in Fort Worth, TX, I have to say that the most important part of having an outdoor party is having a giant cooler filled with icy drinks. Sticking your hands into the ice to get drinks helps. I know it sounds stupid. BUT I swear it is important!

Ooh I second living in a house a while before committing to design choices. My husband and I bought our first house last March (a little rowhouse in Baltimore- I love it even though it is hall-shaped!) and I have already painted the living room and dining room twice. I am regretting all kinds of split second decisions I made last spring, as now that I have lived in the house for a while I have noticed that our light quality is somewhat odd and bright colors don't necessarily look so bright anymore. That being said, I still think de-pinking the walls and removing the carpet would be VERY big steps in the right direction!

I am typically not a white wall fan, but I think that white would make the area look clean, cohesive and modern. The walls have such fun shapes and I would be afraid that trying to paint with a strong color would diminish that look. That pale pink is pretty 80'stastic!

I think that hardwood on the darker side would look nice! It might be a good idea to reconsider your dislike of the white oak after you rip out the carpet and repaint. It could really change how "country" the wood looks to have all the other mess gone.

Your new place looks amazing! I am jealous of your new dome home!
