We have a Bosch for about 3 years now. It does not have a builtin grinder but we have not had any problems with food. I am a scraper but my husband is not and so far (knock on wood), the dishes get clean without any problems. no food clogging or cleaning of food afterwards so far.

just FYI - the lines are made partially of a milk product. We live in a rural area and had a problem where a mouse had eaten part of the line. We have not had a problem since but this was an issue I had not heard of regarding the Bosch.

mschatelaine, thank you for that perspective. Can I ask how much a chicken would be if you bought it from the supermarket and made it yourself? I'm wondering if the prices would be similar to what I see in New York or not.

I've gone both routes - buying it from the grocery store and making it in the crockpot. there is something to say about the convenience of picking it up already cooked and ready to go especially when getting home at 7pm. I also make stock for soup from it and oftentimes one chicken will last 4-5 days for the two of us.

I've been married about 12 years and we've used pretty much everything in our registry. I did have to break myself of the "only use fine china for special occasions" mindset and I'm glad I did. I did get feedback that it was helpful for people who weren't sure what to get us.

I find registries to be helpful to get a sense of what the couple like, even if I don't buy off their registry. I like to give gifts for special occasions and it's nice to know that I'm at least on the right track with regards to taste.

Urbancricket -

I'm not sure where you are located. We are in upstate NY and have had no problems overwintering our chickens. Between their body heat and putting hay in the coop, they stay pretty warm. You do need to make sure that the chickens stay dry and have proper circulation in the coop. You don't want the coop to be air-tight.

the other thing you can do to harden off is, if you have a sheltered front porch or an area not in direct path of wind/sun/cold, you can leave the plants there and then bring them in later in the day.

I'm a bit of a lazy gardener, so I tend to use a cold frame style to harden off. Once outside, unless it's going to drop down to freezing, I don't bring it back inside.

I've been harvesting my plants, putting them in a brown bag and putting them on top of my fridge. the heat from the fridge dries them out and keeps the dust off.

I don't know if the brown bag absorbs excess moisture or if they are just drying quickly enough that it doesn't have time to mold, but I haven't had any problems with this method (keeping fingers crossed).

There is something lovely about using these herbs in the middle of a cold winter!

We've done the carpet on carpet thing for our house. one thing we've noticed that made a huge difference was to have the 2nd carpet cover as much as possible. So if our room is 11x11, we got a 10x10 rug. The couch/chair/table keeps it down so we have not had the problem of the edges flipping over.

My husband sometimes doesn't take his shoes off. But he has certain paths (from the doorway to the fireplace, for example) so i'll have a long runner that he can walk on which will keep him off the main carpet. That limits the debris and dirt that he's tracking in to those main areas.

There is a local nursery that sells beautiful clematis - Spring Valley Greenhouse. http://springvalleygreenhouse.com/. In the spring, they actually give away free (small) clematis to welcome the opening of their nursery.

I have all four that you list above growing in my gardens due to my love of having cut flowers throughout the summer months.

You might have luck growing angel's trumpet in a pot, if you have a sunny place for it. the seeds are pretty easy to germinate. Just a slight warning - all parts of the plant are poisonous.

I'm really enjoying these posts - thank you for doing them.

We turned one of our bedrooms into a library because I have so many books. We did floor to ceiling shelves (bought the wood and put up the shelves ourselves) and separated out the collections with little library-oriented pictures or objects. (for example, my set of law books has a small framed photo that separates it from my husband's computer books). I have some literary posters framed and on the walls. We also made the room very comfortable for someone to sit and browse (rocking chair, blankets, throw pillows, etc.) so it's a welcoming and interesting space.

One thing I did was think about what I liked about libraries or bookstores that I visit and tried to duplicate that feeling.

Loved the before & after pics on the homeowner site. They really gave a sense of the amount of work went into making this a liveable rental house.

Also I would not have thought about the danger of lead -- appreciate the explanation of how you decided on some of the features.

This does bring back wonderful memories.

After I graduated from college, we used to have communal brunches with an open door policy - we could have anywhere from five to fifteen people. It was a great way to catch up on news and hang out.

Now we still have periodic dinners but they are more once a month affairs rather than a weekly event. But this is definitely a great idea to think about starting up again more regularly.

Carepac - if you're getting white mold, you are probably overwatering your plants. If you can reach in there, try to remove as much moisture from the sides, etc. if it has a lid, take the lid off for a few days to see if it dries up a little bit.

If any leaves look dark or molded, take them out also.

The advice I was given with regards to watering is to take a spray bottle and just spray in there, every couple of days. With the lid on, it should have enough moisture that you don't have to water it like a normal houseplant.

we hang-dry all out clothes using a two-tiered portable closet. It cost under $ 20 and can handle a full load of laundry. The pants and dresses can hang off the sides and the middle top and bottom can handle shirts, shorts, etc.

the nice thing is that in the winter, it adds a little extra moisture in the air as we heat by firewood.

Stephy - do you put the coffee grounds directly on the item (like they are showing with the kitty litter above)? Or do you put it in a container and it absorbs the smells?

I have a kindle that I bought due to the amount of travelling I do and how quickly I read my books. After being trapped in a hotel room with 10 paperback books which I zipped through in my first 3 days of being there, I love the idea of carrying around hundred of books in something that fits into my purse.

I've used my library loan of ebooks to download books while I'm travelling. Additionally Amazon typically has free books available every day. I currently have over 1300 books on my "cloud" so if I'm travelling and bored with what I'm reading, I can access the cloud and download something. (most of the things on my cloud were free)

For eye strain, I can change the font on the kindle to make the font as big (or small) as I want and haven't had any problems.

Along with novels, I can use the convert option to send .pdfs of knitting patterns. I have over 50 knitting patterns to play with the next time I travel with my needle and yarn. I use calibre to convert my friends' unpublished novels into the kindle format to carry around and read, rather than trying to keep track of 200+ loose papers.

Finally, at home, I have a converted bedroom that has over 1000 paperback and hard cover books.

The bottom line is that I am avid (my husband would say "obsessed") reader.
I definitely don't feel that just because I've gone over to the digital world, I'm giving up the print product - they both work well together in my life.

Why I'm Ditching an E-Reader for the New iPad
3/12/12 10:44 PM

To keep the heat down in our house, we layer our clothing. My hands and feet tend to get cold quickly so I have warm fingerless gloves, socks and slippers.
We also learned which rooms offered passive solar heat and one of those is our bedroom. Electric blanket for a 1/2 hour before bed and we're good to go.
We also heat with firewood in our main room. I hung up heavy curtains in the doorway so the heat stayed localized rather than drifting up the stairs and getting lost.
My biggest problem is if I get too cold, then I don't want to move from the one area where I'm warm.

Love mango lassi, especially in this hot weather. But mango with anything (ice cream, yogurt, or just plain) is lovely.
