I've always thought it would be fun/easy to make a couple different bars (lemon bars, brownies, blondies etc). I know this might not seem very wedding-y... but it'd definitely be quick and easy. Pair that with some cookies and you'd have a nice little dessert bar without having to worry about cake.
Congrats and Happy Holidays!

I could spot that pasta-golden color from a mile away! (I now realize that might be a bad thing!)

Felix Gonzales did a piece much like this. He made a "carpet" of green cubed candies wrapped in plastic that had a sound (sorry, can't remember the onomatopoeia!) printed on them in white. You approach the carpet, look at it, pick up a piece, unwrap the candy and eat it! And all of those candies together was very visually pleasing. I've seen other artists doing "carpets" made of many things, one of my favorite was using spices!

great tips!!
I'm a cake decorator, and when I first started at my bakery, writing was a daunting task. I started by piping messages onto parchment paper, then I covered some cake boards with butter cream frosting and piped on those. Piping messages on frosting is a little bit different than just piping on parchment paper- you have to "lay" the message on top of the frosting which makes it easier to remove if there are any mistakes.

And if you don't have any pastry bags or tips, use a ziploc bag with the tip of the corner cut off! I especially like using ziploc bags for chocolate work since I can store the chocolate in it and microwave it when I need it.

It's funny how Marie Antoinette was so rich that she would "play poor" for fun. We remember her for the extravagance, but she really was a trendsetter as well, and (for the time period and her status) a bit of an intellectual liberal. Great post! Gotta love Versailles!

LOVE the post!!

ladymantle- not funny.

All of my coworkers wore purple today! I was so pleased! But it's not over: I'm heading over to a vigil stretching along a busy street here in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

I live in Iowa and my coworkers JUST NOW noticed that owls are popular. I wonder how long it's going to take foxes to make it this far inland...

i'm sorry that this only slightly has anything to do with the post...
every time i think of velvet (hear the word, see the fabric etc) i can't help but think of George Costanza from Seinfeld wanting to be "ensconced in velvet". just felt like sharing...
but more on topic- don't know how i'd feel about a velvet sofa (i've never seen one that wears well, but maybe i'm looking at the wrong velvet sofas), but i'm completely in love with that Mad Men velvet headboard! too bad i could never have it... i'd always be thinking of George...

This reminds me of when I was in high school and my art classes would go on field trips to the Rachofsky House in Dallas TX. My descriptions of it could never do it justice, so here's the website:

I started collecting plates with presidents (preferably with their wives) after I discovered an adorable little saucer with LBJ and Ladybird "painted" on it while my family was cleaning out my grandmother's house. We didn't really know why she had it so I felt I needed to keep it.
My plate collection is expanding rapidly and branching out; I just had to get the Wait Wait Don't Tell Me collectible plate and have Carl Kasell sign it!

Loved reading everyone's answers too!

I agree with the white towels comments. And I agree with anittah in that too many "non-boring" things can potentially make a space look too busy.
But I do appreciate the roundup of interesting ways to make your bathroom yours.

One of my previous roommates was devastated that we couldn't fit a chandelier in our attic apartment bathroom (a concept that never even occurred to me at the time) so next to the sink we had narrow table with a small lamp on it, and it really did make our awkwardly shaped small bathroom feel a lot nicer.

beautiful!
some tips: to make sure that the fruit fillings do not spill out of the sides, create a "well" around the edge of cake with frosting. simply put some frosting in a pastry bag (or lacking that, a ziploc bag with a corner cut off) and outline the outside edge of the cake, spoon in the filling and plop the next layer on top.
and to make sure that the top tier does not cave in on the bottom (too many layers of cake can collapse on itself) use a system of cake boards and dowels as seen on bakerella's tutorial:

I absolutely love reading everyone's frozen fixes! Love this!

When I was a kid living in Texas my friends and I would eat frozen peas- our parents were confused and pleased at the same time!

Now I work at a small bakery with a big freezer- I now love cake right out of the freezer as well as spritz cookies sprinkled with sugar. I won't eat the spritz cookies any other way now.

and as a life-long scout I can attest that frozen Thin Mints are heavenly!

I grew up in Dallas, and as far as major Texas cities go, Austin is still my favorite (Fort Worth is second at the moment)
I've made a habit now of visiting my friend in Austin on New Years for the awesome parade on New Years Eve. It's at night downtown, and everything is lit up and a bunch of great organizations make floats (my favorite are the bikes!). It's funny because, for the most part, I think parades are pretty lame, but I LOVE this one! Great fun for families as well as young adults, and the bars aren't too far for you to get to partying afterward!
Thanks for the post!

I'm from Texas so naturally the whole concept of autumn is still totally thrilling to me. I've been living in the Iowa now for some years and I absolutely love apple picking! My boyfriend and I go to this adorable place: http://www.honeycreekacres.com/
AND I went to a haunted corn maze!
http://www.bloomsburyfarm.com/
AND I won a pumpkin carving contest! (no link, just still in shock on that one...)
AND I drank hard apple cider at a Halloween drag show! (not totally autumn related unless you count the apple cider. and yes, we have drag shows in Iowa.)

It's been a great autumn for this gal.

I'm so glad you mentioned it here!! It's possibly one of the coolest places for retro furniture and oddities. When I was in high school we used to go there for the clothes. Now I ogle at the dishes and coffee tables! And I'm really glad to hear they're opening a second location!

i love kodafa! one of my first jobs was at a Hookah Bar/Cafe that served schewarma sandwiches, tons of tea and kodafa and that's basically all i ate while working there. it didn't look much like the picture above. they always had large sheets of it, and it was a brilliant nuclear orange with mounds of pistachios marking where to cut for individual slices. we'd pour some rose water syrup on it, then throw it in the microwave and poof! it'd disappear into a lucky belly! it was really wonderful on hot summer nights with hot tea (and a shisha filled with rose-flavored tobacco!).
i've never made it myself, but this post has definitely inspired me to do so. i have so many wonderful memories associated with that dish.
thanks for the post!
