We have had the Nest for a couple months now and I don't believe it is much (if at all) better than our previous 7-day Honeywell programmable thermostat. Nest does not "learn" near as well as it is advertised to. In fact, it learned less sessions or timeframes than we had with the previous. Also, if it senses that someone is home, it turns up the heat, even if you don't want it to (for example, if I stop in during the day for a few hours, or if my husband works from home but likes a chillier house). I think we might be spending more money on heat with it, though it is hard to compare with different months. How To Install a Nest Thermostat |

We did one for my son's first year, so not a calendar year, but he was born December 10th, so close. After his first birthday we compiled the photos into a myPublisher book for the grandparents for Christmas. Huge success. I wish I'd had the time to caption them the way some people are, but I'm happy with what we were able to do. Are You Doing a 365 Photo Project? |

We have the same tiles, and underneath them is nothing. It just goes straight to the attic, with all of its fiberglass insulation glory. So, clearly the previous owner of our home was taking the easy/cheap way out, but the fixing it will not be nearly as easy as some of the posters describe. The only way to know what you are working with is to try and see what is above it - maybe try from the attic first, if it is a top floor. But if it is like ours, it is actually a fire hazard, because there is no fire break between one room and the next - which makes it very unsafe for bedrooms. A Bedroom Eyesore: Ceiling Tiles |

My grandma isn't so tech-saavy, so I went a little more lo-fi for my gift for her last year. I bought a stack of notecards and sent her one to open on Christmas that said "this is one of 12!" And then on the first of each month sent her another card with all the big (and little) news that happened in my month. Everytime I see her she comments about how much she loves the notes and to please keep them up. And who doesn't like getting mail? A Simple Green Gift Idea For Long Distance Relatives |

The September issue of "This Old House" has an article about patternmakers who still do this type of art - handcarving wood doorknobs/light fixtures, etc. to make molds for metal-casting. They list Eric Kaster of Eleek, Inc. in Portland, OR. Maybe you can google him to see if he has a website? Where To Find Cool Handmade Door Knobs? Good Question |

The comments above about the rocking of the tub while turning it and the difficulty of emptying the water are spot on. We bought the Wonder Wash before we had laundry in the building thinking it would be very useful. It's not near as great as we'd hoped. Its great for delicates though, as well as quickly getting rid of stains before they set. Items do come out very wet, and need to be wrung dry, which causes wrinkles, and therefore ironing. It is great if it is your only option, if you have other ways for laundry though, its not worth the effort. Apartment Therapy Chicago | Wonderwash Portable Washing Machine Mini Spin Dryer |

I saw something similar a couple years ago at the National Building Museum's Green House exhibit. I recreated it, just using baltic birch plywood for a box and regular bbq bamboo skewers. It works really well, though you need many more skewers than you'd imagine to keep the knives tight at the top. It makes sense that it wouldn't dull them because they aren't rubbing against the wood as they are in a traditional block, though a magnetic strip would serve the same purpose. I just made it because I liked the design, and haven't had any problems with the durability of the skewers. Apartment Therapy Re-Nest | Bamboo Box Knife Holders from VivaTerra |

We did this past winter in our Chicago apartment as well, except we were using it as a second layer of insulation instead of a window treatment. We think it worked pretty well in conjunction with our usual shrink-wrap plastic covers. Apartment Therapy Re-Nest | Bubble Wrap "Stained Glass" Windows |
