Based on our experiences a couple of additional tips:
1) M-bags, the post office offers this slow boat service for printed materials. A great and cheap way to take your most precious books with you.
2) Don't necessarily trust overseas real estate agents. In some countries they are extremely untrustworthy (think used car salespeople). We found a temporary place for the first couple of months which allowed us to check out the area, see what the going rates really were and ensure that the place we ended up in suited our needs.
3) Bank accounts. US banks do not allow you to have an oversea address so you will have to close all of your existing accounts and get new ones in your new country of residence. The paperwork takes a special process and the rules are different depending upon where you go but you have very little choice in the matter.

Personally, I prefer my OneLessDesk by Heckler design. It is expensive but substantially less so than the Herman Miller designs. It is very space conscious, made of solid materials that can withstand a heavy monitor and it has a concealed cord management system on the back. Oh, and it is stylish enough to withstand my uber-picky standards although I chose the not-so-edgy white color.

Wow! Tasteful, elegant and a wonderful use of subtle textures. For a place such as that I might even be willing to move to Alabama.

These lighting fixtures are the primary ones but not the only ones. More suggestions regarding the initial question would be appreciated.

Not halogen due to the additional energy costs. This is the primary lighting in the living area and as our winter nights are long the costs end up being substantial.

Oooh! I have lusted over the caboche lamp since I saw it in a restaurant in and East End London venue. Have kept it in my file of "I will someday have that..."

Absolutely love it!

Nice execution and idea. Would be interested to know what the total end cost was though as I suspect that it is still way beyond the reach of most people.

Thanks to you all for your assistance and comments. This has been most helpful.

Matilde: the gulet trip I took sailed around the underwater ruins in Kekova in the southern region of Antalya, not far from Kas. I can certainly recommend staying in Kas as it is laid back and does not have the high pressure touts like in the larger cities.

Since I don't have a tv music is key. No room for the turntable type so it more digitally-oriented but still manages to create a sense of atmosphere. Couldn't live without it!

Sorry this isn't related to the prevention of tagging but rather on the photo used for the posting.

The wall in that photo is connected to a graphic artist's shop and art collective in London (near Brick Lane) that regularly repaints that space. I quite like it as it keeps what would be an otherwise bleak looking industrial area bright and fun. But if you like that then you should check out their offices made from old tube train cars that have been painted and put on the roof of the building.

Ours is probably a typical London landlord, he gets his money and that is all that matters to him. We had a major leak from the apartment above us (read: water streaming down one wall of our kitchen and from the ceiling) and he didn't even get back to us until 2 weeks after it began. Took him 1 year to get all the damage repaired but that was not before the ceiling had partially collapsed!

Let's just say that there are definitely downsides to renting...

A friend of mine did this on the ground floor of her very large, very stylish London home and every time you go there all you can see is dust and footprints. She has said that while she loved the idea the practicalities of it in real life just didn't quite work.

Love the giant fish lamp! Does he sell it and/or have a website? Would be very interested to check out the rest of his designs.

Having been to both of these places I must agree the decor is playful, fun and worth a peek. Of the two I prefer Lounge Lover but be warned that it has some of the rudest staff in London.

The entrance looks like the doorway to a Japanese love hotel and the interior too dark and industrially inspired (insane asylum or prison maybe?). While each concept serves a purpose, neither works for a place to live.

Love the look but no can't afford it. It's too bad there doesn't seem to be much, if any, affordable eco-furniture out there yet.

Ewwww. While very pretty it doesn't make for a very hygienic kitchen surface. Even in a shoe-free household (like ours) feet are dirty and should not be on counter tops. Strike out!
