I don't know, in Toronto the big management companies are often super sketchy- Transglobal is one often cited as the worst (not that I've lived in one of their buildings).
I recently moved out of a place owned by a small management company (adnat) that was the absolute worst- they would trash other employees over the phone, play dumb whenever I followed up on something they said they'd do, and eventually, I had to take them to the rental tribunal (and won).
It totally depends. I don't think you can develop any hard and fast rules on this sort of relationship, just as you can't for any other relationship.

The one thing that really makes me nutty is the buying of common supplies.
I live with two dudes, and I don't know if they're just oblivious or if they just have a higher tolerance for being out of stuff, but it is incredibly irritating to be the only who buys:
garbage bags, compost bags, recycling bags, dish soap, sponges, toilet paper, paper towels, plastic wrap, etc.
We set up systems. They don't follow them. Sigh.

I have zero to add to this slightly bizarre discussion, but to agree with Mircat, and say that people do notice the weird names.
While working retail, I once had a customer named "Apple Smith Newton". Hilarious on many levels. We kept her reciept around for awhile, just to show people.
That said, I have a normal first name (one of the most popular names the year I was born - Stephanie), and so people chose to find hilarity in my last name. Still do.
So basically, chill. People will find anything and everything funny, and you can't really win.

I currently live next door to casa domestic violence.

They have loud, obscenity filled screaming fits at least once a week. One night, the wife sat on the flat roof over the second floor and screamed about throwing herself off, alllll night. Or so my roommate says. She didn't call the cops though, and i asked her why, and she said "not 911 worthy". I had to explain the concept of the general line, and we decided next fight, we'd call.

So two saturday nights ago, they were screaming and fighting so loud, i could hear them over the TV. Stuff kept falling down the stairs too. (we share a wall with their staircase). So when I heard a very large item (body?) go thudthudthud down the stairs, I called the police. One car shows up. Suddenly, there are 7 cars, an ambulance, and the ambulance SUV that shows up sometimes.
Someone was taken away on a stretcher.

Soooo, calling before talking to the landlord is a good thing sometimes.

(Best part though? the trashy punk neighbours on the otherside, who think they're DJs were all like "you're THOSE people?" when my roommate mentioned that we had called the cops as they were talking about the shenanigans. Assholes. Can't wait to move.)

I understand the hacking when you have a 50 year old smoker for a neighbour, who sounds like he's coughing up a hairball every time. You can just hear the slurp of the nicotine-stained phlegm during his thrice daily extended hacking fits.

That being said, the domestic violence family i live next to would have to be the worst noise I've had to deal with.

Beautiful! And exactly the colour scheme I've been planning for my new bedroom.

If you don't mind, what paint colour is this? Thanks!

Oh, and all three of those bins I mentioned are city issued - you have to use them, or buy yellow tags for your garbage bags- it's a means to reduce household waste (or increase dumping).

Heh, yeah, most downtown Torontonians have not yet figured out how to deal with these ginormous bins.
We have the blue recycling one, a big black one for garbage, and a small green one for compost, and we live in the middle house of three row houses. No backyard/side of house/alley access.
Instead, our front porch (and most of the porches of our neighbours as well) are now devoted to bin storage.
Although one of our neighbours had a good idea - they put a door in the lattice on their front porch, allowing them to store the bins underneath. They do have a high porch and the "one bag" size bins though.

Oh and with a 36 day garbage strike, leaving the house smells lovely.

I love the idea, some of the houses just don't accommodate it well.

Things I love about Toronto:
- it doesn't take its self too seriously. It's a bit grungy and dirty, and I like it that way.
- The public transit.
- the Crystal (http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/c/ca/Royal_Ontario_Museum.jpg/800px-Royal_Ontario_Museum.jpg)
- The diversity and multiculturalism

Things I don't love about Toronto:
- Entitled 905ers (suburbanites)
- The public transit.
- The smog
- RENT (1200 for a two bedroom basment? Gah)
