I leave it on (it's a CF). I leave it on to make our address clearly visible in case we need a police car or ambulance. Also, I feel it's worth the energy because I associate it with home security. I believe it deters burglars, who I assume would prefer a dark doorway in which to work, and people who might otherwise hide there, waiting for me to get back from the grocery store with my 10 p.m. gallon of milk. I am careful not to only leave it on when I "need" it, as then it becomes a communication to any observant person that I am not home at that moment or that I am alone waiting for my husband to come home. I don't think this makes me paranoid either; like locking my door, it is just a small precaution.

this is awesome!!!

P.S. I was caught off guard by the "cringe" comment also, but she means for safety reasons not style.

My husband and I spend, per month (and at a regular grocery store, not whole foods) $600. It's ridiculous. I only walk to and from the grocery store, so having to carry it apparently is not enough to limit my spending.

I seem to spend $20 every time I go and I go a lot. While I don't understand it, I may try this system and see if it works. Maybe it will make more sense afterwards.

apologies for the 3 in a row, but:

if there is one thing the hallway snapshot conveys to me, it is The End. The combination of his frail posture/gait and being surrounded by his personal history makes it look like his time is up. Like he's literally moving towards the light.

I actually agree with you, Louise. For his views on abortion alone, I would never ever vote for McCain. So we don't need to compete as to who has been in more military homes or taken more psychology classes.

Meg, you're correct. A college degree is important if you want to be an officer. It's the principle difference between an officer an enlisted member of the military. My tiny point was not that college isn't important, but that not everyone who never went, quit, or "flunked out" lies awake at night eaten alive by it.

I don't think so Louise. "love me" walls are very common in the military, not one man's reaction to a snaffu somewhere along the way. And not everyone gives a crap about college either.

We had an upstairs neighbor who always seemed to get into fights with, we assumed, a boyfriend in the middle of the night.

One night, around 1 am, it was much worse than the usual yelling and door slamming. It sounded as if things were getting broken and then there was a huge crash, like someone (or something huge) had been thrown. Then just one voice yelling. We immediately called the police.

Well, turns out, she was there alone and always was. Apparently what we mistook for her boyfriend was a family member on a speaker phone. She had moved from the other side of the world and called home often because she was homesick. Evidently, she did this in the middle of the night because she "didn't want to wake them up."

Awesome.

favorite snack is a good idea, but the rest of it is not stuff worth hauling. I'd load pictures onto an iPod before schlepping a digital picture frame around.

maybe they know people enjoy catching spelling/grammatical errors. They certainly caught my eye, like a laundromat sign hung upside down.

In Japan, a single woman over 25 might be referred to as "Christmas Cake" -as in, no one wants it after the 25th.

It's just one more thing I'm not allowed to do on my apartment deck. But I hope lurker2209 is right and that this shifts.

While I do hang some things in the house, there's not enough room for this (I have a drying rack and several door knobs). If I had some proper indoor space, that would help. For instance, if it were possible to stretch a clothesline across the bathroom (where I don't have to worry about the carpet getting dripped on), that would be great. A little hotel in Germany had that very thing built into it: the line came out of one wall and attached to a hook on the opposite side. A great idea.

When this episode came out, I'd never heard of Pottery Barn and for a good year thought it was an imaginary store for the show. So I guess they did a good job incorporating it into the Friends' world.

Does kind of remind me of the '80s though when toys were shows and shows were commercials. Or the '90s when Martha Stewart launched Baby to help Gap launch BabyGap.

I'm going to cry, these look so fantastic. Bamboo floors! Energy Efficient Appliances! Now if apartment complexes would follow suit with some equally intelligently-designed, environmentally-progressive units, I'd be set.

where did you buy this alternative? I'd be interested.

Regardless of the quality of the study, I know that a new shower curtain reeks for days after hanging it up. Whatever it is that is causing the smell I would be happy to avoid.
