I'd stick with a tissue fabric. Something weightless. it'll soften the whole wall. Make sure you go ABOVE and LEFT of the window to hang them so the window appears to float. Curtains for Light, Airy Look in Living Room? Good Questions |

Code requires a non combustible hearth. I'd add a nice slab of stone on the bottom step, and make that whole sunken area firewood storage, which would look really cool. But do it properly, don't just lay it over top of the wood. Also, do an over mantel with a visual element up high, which will draw the eye up and away from the floor.
