I agree - I was prepared to see a scratched and sorry looking frame that needed to a coat of paint to be presentable - but the frame looks great, I would gladly take it sans paint! That said its a good idea for old furniture, although the paint color is a bit too bright for me.

I label my boxes according to general categories (clothes, books, kitchen, etc) so that I know which boxes don't need to be opened right away. Otherwise, it really doesn't take that long to unpack your stuff and some of the items mentioned would be the last things to be packed and should all be thrown in a box together (toothbrush, clothes to change into, etc). The toilet paper and a clean set of sheets are good ideas though.

I hope all of these kitchens have adjoining walk-in pantries, because they seem severely lacking in cabinet/storage space.

Ditto on the other comments - evoking images of violence against women = "playful and irreverent"?

I once read a tip for travelers who need white noise to sleep but are in a hotel with thin walls -- turn the TV or radio to a channel that is all static before going to bed. I sleep with a fan but I really appreciate all the tips on using an Ipod or Iphone. This will come in handy the next time I travel!

Personally I like the brick, and would opt for painting the wooden doors instead because right now those two things are clashing. But if you really don't like the color of the brick, try white washing them -- if a future owner of the house doesn't like it, they can paint it another color or cover it completely as others have suggested.

I'm puzzled as to why this post is on AT? Is AT branching into quality of life posts now? I'm honestly curious, I haven't had time to follow AT recently.

Am I the only one having a hard time reconciling the pics of a very nice NYC apartment with the phrase "I am on a tight budget"?

That said, if you want a quick fix then I would echo the suggestions for artwork -- if you don't have the time to search out permanent pieces that you love before the bff gets into town, look for something on Craigslist that you can resell later (or ask friends/family, they may have something in storage or have something they are looking to replace and will give you the artwork they no longer want). A new more colorful duvet cover and lamp shades would also be a way to liven up your rooms.

Amazing place! Can the owners comment as to why they went with such a dark color for the ceiling accent?

Unless there is something wrong with the finish on the bases, don't paint them! I can see these working with brightly colored and patterned shades, depending on the other colors in your room.

It looks to me as if there's barely any room for a person to sit up, much less stand up, in the lofted sleeping area -- are they expected to simply slither off the mattress and down the stairs? Otherwise it looks lovely.

There was a post on AT with a cute kitchen and they had a window system suspending several rows of small pots containing herbs in their window -- in the comments it said that it was a discontinued item at IKEA and I wish I could get my hands on it because it looked great!

A picture would help quite a bit -- to get an idea of what the firpeplace looks like, how much light there is, what colors the walls are, what the flooring is like, etc. There's too little to go on right now -- for instance, what do you plan on using the room for? Entertaining? Watching TV? Playing with your small children or pets?
