LOVE your home and especially the blue/green tones in the first pic. Very much something I'd do. I also love that your cat seems to be licking its butt at the dog bench ;)

Although we have lots of disagreements about cleaning, we have very few about decor. Except for the time he put a picture of Spock in the kitchen, which was really not logical.

I dunno... if you're not going to walk on it, you could put just about any plant there. I guess maybe if you're hung up on it being lawn-like...

I do like the texture, though. It's very pretty.

People think it's hot over 75?
WA HA HA HA HA HA!
I'd be fine without heat, but AC is life support in Houston.

It's funny, I've never had any of the weird foods associated with my own heritage, like the head cheese and black rice, but I lived near Mexico and married a Chinese guy so I've got quite a list of strange stuff I've put in my mouth. Just off the top of my head:

Jellyfish = yum. Not much taste (it's seasoned with soy sauce and sesame oil) but has a pleasant crisp-tender texture.

Sea cucumber = blech!

Raw snails = meh. I'm not much for shellfish in general, except scallops.

tripe = I prefer it Mexican style and crispy, but I've had good tripe with hot peppers for dim sum. Otherwise it seems fairly bland and boring to me.

duck palms = surprisingly good with vinegar and cucumbers. I have never tried chicken feet on the bone. I don't see how there's anything to eat off it. My husband has childhood memories; he refused to eat them because they looked like dragon claws.

barbacoa = yum*. *Pura carne only. I have never had an eyeball. Mom got hazed by her co-workers when one put one in the end of her taco. It was something she never forgot.

sesos (cow brains) = yum

menudo = I don't crave this the way my little brothers do, but it's okay once in a while.

octopus = rubbery. I hear you're supposed to cook it with a cork to tenderize it. I might like it that way; I like calimari.

I find huge family portraits over the mantle somehow freaky and self-obsessive.

Well, it beats having humungo kids' toys on the floor, and it's much better looking than a lot of activity sets. I'd be worried, though, that by the time the kiddos were able to reach the top of the table (and not put marbles in their mouths), the novelty might be lost. Also, what happens when your kid tries to hide his broccoli in the marble slots? Ew.

I'm amused, but I wouldn't take it home. I'd feel weird sitting in his lap.

I wouldn't pay to have them done, but I have a couple snapshots of the cats framed and placed along the hallway. It adds a little humor to an otherwise featureless pass-through area. Just snapping around with the digital camera all the time, we ended up with a few really priceless ones, including one of the cats with her paw around a tiny stuffed tiger. It was one of those things you could never get a cat to do in a studio.

My mom took portraits of us when we were kids and sometimes included the dog in the pictures. We were assembling and my little brother was holding the beagle when she randomly tipped her head upside down to lick the side of my face. Mom managed to catch that on film. Needless to say, she enlarged it and put it in a prominent place.

empty, you basically have to water everything with an eye dropper. I live in a hot climate, so bitty containers tend to dry out really fast for me. It might be more trouble than it's worth where you live.

I'm trying to cut back on tiny plantings (since I'm already addicted to putting things in tea cups) but this is cute too! Maybe I could find a few glasses for the bathroom goodies...

For freebies and second-hand stuff, that's pretty amazing! I'm actually liking the rug... it's silly, in a good way... and I'm a big fan of using what you have. Great art and I love the red console.

I totally agree with mixing it up but have trouble making it look as good as either of these rooms myself, so I'm guessing there's a right and wrong way to do it.

I notice that in the top room, the wood tones are sort of different tints of the same hue, so it makes sense that they look good together. The bottom one?... I can't explain it. I guess you really just have to have them all together and decide whether you like it.

Re: leaving something for the other party - hasn't worked for me. Most of the time, if I don't clean things, they just won't get clean. And with the less used parts of the apartment - that's pretty much what happens. I'd have to wait until every plate in the house was stacked on the counter.

My husband does have the questionable virtue of occasionally asking to help with something, usually when I'm a minute from done. No idea if it's on purpose for not. A lot of times I try to steer him - oh I'm fine in the kitchen, honey, but maybe you could go in the den and find a magazine or two to recycle? I've never actually checked to see if he's doing it, though... I suspect not.

Maybe instead of putting it off till August, your friend could start more slowly - ie. sweeping once a week instead of twice, dusting once every two weeks instead of weekly. But definitely get him used to it before baby comes; no putting it off.

I'd heard about the catnip. It supposedly keeps rats away as well. (Hmm...!)

I'm making catnip vodka to keep away mosquitos and dab on cat toys. I'm hesitant to put it anywhere, though... it's a pretty lurid shade of green!

Mmm, I don't know if you're going to get that off without removing the stain itself. Of course you could just try sticking post-its all over the desk and spraying it with water. :/

In any case, good luck.

That second photos is really striking. Not sure I'd want my head hitting my shoes when I sit on the couch, but great lateral thinking. And I love how the lamp comes out of it.

Love it. It's serene, has a bit of froufiness without being saccarine, and a touch of quirkiness. I like objects that are durable enough to age gracefully. A clear plastic chair is just not going to look that good after a hundred years of use.

abc123 - true, I'm just surprised no one got insulted by the fact that he was in the tub.

Anyway. To heck with the world; love your home and make it yours. I'm neither a Buddhist or a Christian, but I think this is super. And I want to steal the blue flower painting.
