I second the person who said that most recipes from mags are online. When I get a cooking mag, I take a few days to enjoy it, and then I pull up the recipe index from that issue on the magazine's website and pin or use eatyourbooks to bookmark and note which recipes I want to use. I've gotta admit I was highly skeptical at first but pinterest has been working really well for me in terms of keeping things organized, being able to search by keyword, etc. On Letting Go of Your Food Magazine Collection: Got Any Tips for Me? |

I'm not an expert but I make shakshuska frequently in my cast iron skillet and haven't had any issues with metallic taste. I'm not great about maintaining the seasoning on my skillet... Will Cooking Acidic Foods Damage My Cast Iron Skillet? Good Questions |

I sometimes opt to bake dairy-free, and generally have good luck with using soy milk in place of normal milk, and in some cases subbing things like bananas, applesauce or pumpkin in place of butter, sour cream or cream. I've also grown to like using olive oil in place of butter in many muffin recipes. Until you're more familiar with substitutions in baking, I'd suggest finding a recipe that meets your needs. If you're a more experienced baker and don't mind failing a few times, just go ahead and try some substitutions on your own. Dairy-Free Baking Recipes That Aren't Vegan or Gluten-Free? I am SO excited for the Amiigo - I love that the price is similar to a fitbit or jawbone but it'll do so much more... (Note for Android users - this will only work with phones that have bluetooth 4.0/bluetooth smart, which is hard to find! You might need to upgrade your phone to actually use the Amiigo...) I always use equal amounts of onions and carrots in my tomato basil soup, with only about a cup of skim milk or soy milk. (No cream.) Using a blender or a handheld immersion blender leaves the soup thick with a great rich flavor. It's certainly not a "purist" version of tomato basil soup but every time I've served it people have asked for the recipe and are pleasantly surprised when they find out about the extra ingredients. We have a binder with plastic sleeves where the original recipe cards are kept, and we've also scanned/transcribed the most important ones and created a printed photo book (which is nice because you can easily have more copies printed for relatives). To clarify, when I say under counted I mean that for the precise item I ate (I don't select the general item or the option with the least calories, I'll either enter a specific recipe or find the exact item in the database...) myfitnesspal on average listed the specific item as less calories than caloriecount.about.com or thedailyplate on livestrong. (Livestrong and caloriecount were generally the same.) I've lost over 50 lbs with exercise and (nutritionally-conscious) calorie counting and have maintained a healthy weight for several years. When I was using myfitnesspal, the general under counting definitely affected my weight. I guess my point is try using 2-3 different sites to make sure that what you're counting is as accurate as it can be. Healthy Living: Calorie Counting Apps Tablet App Recommendations |

I've used a few of these apps before, but I'm excited to see some ones I haven't heard of on this list to try out. I know myfitnesspal is really popular and a well-designed app, but when I compared it to other tracking apps it was actually UNDER counting my calories on average- not a good thing! I've also used the caloriecount from about.com app with good success, which isn't on this list. Healthy Living: Calorie Counting Apps Tablet App Recommendations |

One of my favorite ways to figure out how to use up random ingredients is www.eatyourbooks.com - I've got all my cookbooks, personal recipes and favorite blogs added to my "bookshelf" on the website, and I can search to see which recipes have the ingredient cake flour - I pulled up about 450 recipes. I like this recipe in particular for using cake flour: http://smittenkitchen.com/blog/2008/02/29/big-crumb-coffee-cake/ What Can I Make With Cake Flour? Good Questions |
