I would walk away. Whatever money your saving will go into making that place look decent - and everything you purchase will NOT go with whatever space you move into next. If you are looking for color inspiration, I would suggest checking out the designers guild. Tricia guild is a master at balancing color and pattern - study that for a couple of months before testing our acquired skills. Also, I know you have an AC under the window, but if you can somehow work around that, I would suggest relocating the bookcase(/murphybed?), and placing the sofa in front of the windows with about 1.5-2 feet clearance between the window and the sofa. It'll elongate the look of the windows, give the sofa more pronounced standing in the living room, and allow you to start complimenting curtains (to the floor length) with sofa with throws and throw pillows. painting around it is one good suggestions. I would go with a yellow tone, something to accentuate that beautiful wall, but of course you want to coordinate with and compliment the colors in the other furnishings. Flowers on the mantle is also an excellent idea. I would suggest picking up one of tricia guild's books and seeing what she does with historical stuff. Tips To Brighten Up Wood-Lined Wall? everyone is totally on point here. That said, you really do need a new sofa. You can find brilliant sofas on the cheap on craigslist or in-store or online at housingworks. It might not be for the faint of heart, you'll have to search regularly and make sure the sofa is clean and bed bug free, but that bunchy leather sofa is really detracting from the room's potential.
