I can't STAND watching her show. She pronounces the most random words with the most bizarrely over-the-top "ethnic(?)" accent. Someone needs to tell her that, seriously, she really can just say "pan-schet-tuh," she doesn't have to go "Pan-CHEEEHHHHH-TUH!" every time. Ugh.

I love the idea, but this is a terrible color choice. Maybe it's just the photo, but that red-orange vibrates and is physically painful to look at.

I am behind everything here, especially the first tip. Appliances take up SO MUCH SPACE! Counter and storage alike. I have maybe three large small appliances (food processor, crock pot, Keurig). Only one lives "out" in the kitchen (Keurig), the other two live on a tippity top cabinet shelf I couldn't reach on the daily anyway. Counter space is more precious than cabinet in my kitchen, so that works for me.

I have a rule I snagged from Alton Brown: No unitaskers in the kitchen! No this press or that baller, you can get by with a spoon or the butt of a beer bottle. If it's superfluous, it can go eff itself. :)

Love the rug and the blue dino. :D

The frames above the bed freak me OUT! Do you not have sex in that bed!? Does it not jostle about when you get in and out? I'm not anti leaning pictures, but put a shelf to the side of the bed and lean them, on the headboard is just not practical!

Yay, yay, YAY. One of the greatest joys of owning a dog is cuddling up with it on the couch. Why do you have a pet if you're going to have your panties in a wad about where it can exist? Do the canine race a favor and leave dog ownership to the less uptight.

Dogs do get locked out of the bedroom at night, though. For restful sleep reasons, and for intimacy reasons. But there are exceptions... like letting them in on a Saturday morning for cuddles (or a rambunctious wake-up call).

The shoes don't bother me (srsly, people? It's on top of the covers and the shoes look fine) as much as the TOTALLY RANDOM patch of green-blue paint on the white wall!?!?!? WTF is that!!? The rest of the apartment looks so lovely, I don't understand?!

The dark gray fireplace wall is so beautiful, though... I love a gorgeous use of a bold, dark paint color.

Nice tips! I hadn't even thought about the long exposure option. I will be employing that one! :)

The "it looks like a tire" thing doesn't bother me (it looks like a cylinder... like an ottoman would?), but I'm left thinking holy crap, how much super glue must you have gone through!? That stuff ain't cheap! ;)

That said, GORG. And very clever. I love resourcefulness!

I hate to burst your bubble and play the "shoulda coulda woulda" card, but my advice is "move somewhere else."

I fell in LOVE with an apartment once that didn't have laundry facilities or a dishwasher. Boy, did I come to resent that place. You really have to be honest with yourself about what you need in a home, and pass up anything that doesn't meet your basic requirements... no matter how cute it is.

I know nothing about planning an over-arcing design and executing it... I get what I love and what I think will work for my space. I'll be obsessed with changing two or three elements of my home at a time, and will be furiously on the search for something to fill that hole in my life. Or, I'll mosey through a store and will trip over something that's OMGSOAMAZING and get happy accidents that way.

So I guess I'm with JDAD on the "eclectic" style... not that I don't want it to look put together, but I would rather my home look like me than a page in a magazine. :)

It's so funny that this post should pop up... I am in the process of researching striking photographs of antique cameras for our home decor. I'm doing a less kitschy version of "his" and "hers" art on either side of our bed; me, the photographer, will have a vintagey camera, and BF, the fil-uhm director, will have an old movie camera.

1, 2 and 3 look like crap.
4 and 8 look sloppy/lazy.
7 just looks weird.

About the only ones that look decent are 6, 9 and 10, although I don't know that any of them really look great, just not weird. So I don't know how much that really says.

Sorry, AT. This is a misfire...

Is something preventing you from taking the art out of the frame? A basic black frame with a white mat would work, a la http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/00078051/
I would also suggest putting some bright white copy paper behind this in the frame. It looks like it was drawn on... tracing paper? I could barely tell what it was at first, other than a couple random blobs of color.

And, going on sc1904's point, something with character is huge. I absolutely despise the cookie-cutter Modern American Home (TM). Give me old-world-feel molding, windows, door frames, fireplaces, ceilings... something! Interesting architecture is a must!

Natural light is awesome--agreed! Being prone to depressive swings, I needs my vitamin D.

My big things are - DISHWASHER (omg... doing dishes by hand BLOWS), washer & dryer at least on-site (if not in the unit itself), and absolutely, positively, definitely NO galley kitchens, no matter how many half-walls they throw in!!

City, city, city, CITY! I'm right there with CarolinaZhangDesign--I can see the country (or pseudo-country) being good for raising kids, but I ain't going that route, so it's an urbanite's life for me.

I grew up in the country, and it bored me to tears. There is NOTHING to DO! I absolutely despise it. I love having people to see, things to do, variety and spontaneity and culture. I like that I can walk places, I like that exciting events happen on my doorstep. Sometimes things like parking and traffic can get annoying (and honestly, it's mostly when the surburbanites stumble in and don't know what the eff they're doing), but if you ask me, it's a small price to pay for the energy and stimuli of the city.

I have never been closer to my neighbors since moving to the city. The quiet little dive bar below my apartment is a hub for a radius of several blocks, very "Cheers"-y. It's one of the greatest senses of community I've ever known.

City Mouse vs. Country Mouse:
Which Is Your Utopia?

Like MARYBC said, multiple days!! I am having a "painting party" with a few friends next weekend to paint my bedroom. I have already started taping off baseboards and trim. I can live with it for a week, and I want to get down to the main event when they arrive.

That said, also: employ friends. Strength and speed in numbers! Feed them, booze them (post-painting), trade crafty labor (my friends don't sew, I'm making throw pillows and curtains for them). Put on some music and make it fun.
