I agree with ScannerJockey, is there anything else you could use that space for and move your bed to the ground level? I know the ceiling is only about 3' high but maybe that space could be used for storage, a reading nook, etc. Or, if you really want to try the cozy space (you can always move things around later) I would try draping fabric along the railing to create a cozy space. I think a small light (many of which can be cordless if there's no outlet up there) would be more than enough for reading or anything else. I would think that a very bright light would heat up the small space very quickly. Add in lots of nice pillows and soft blankets to really create a cozy feel. I would prefer a murphy bed or traditional bed that is blocked off. There is something very dorm-like about having your guests sit where you sleep. You are not going to change your sheets every time someone comes over so not only do they get to sit where you sleep (and everything else you will do in your bed) but their clothes, which have picked up germs and gunk from things like the subway, cars, benches, chairs at restaurants and coffee shops, etc, are all going to end up in your bedding To Murphy or Not To Murphy? I don't think Laura was trying to take away pink, make it gender neutral, etc. In the post she already said that most of the toys in her house were already pink, She probably wanted some variety in colors for the children and for herself. I love pink, but I don't like the idea of only having a swarm of neons and pastels in any one shade for children to play with, variety is the spice of life. House plants, there is something about having living things on your space (when you lack a pet) that is so nice. Summer is my favorite time because they have so many at different places and $1 clearance at hardware stores helps my balcony feel like a big garden. Budgeting without Boredom: Small Splurges |

How do you take your images into the store? Do you just need to have them on a USB? Sorry I am not very tech friendly and I want to have that figured out before I drive to the above mentioned stores, which are all a good 30 minutes or more from me. I am actually moving Saturday! The best advice I was given is to have some overlap time where you are still in your old apartment but have the keys to the new place. Although it can be expensive my roommate and I have already cleaned everything on the list and more and are now taking over breakable items and other things we don't want in a dirty moving truck. I think I am one of the few people who really enjoys having a roommate, and cringes at the idea of living alone. I have only had one bad roommate- we were in college and my other roommate and I desperately needed a third person for our new apartment, and she had what I called "puddle-lake" syndrome. If you were worried about one paper she was worried about three, if you had to work a double at work she "had" to work a 20 hour day, etc. It got to the point where I just ignored her, and she seemed to stick to her other, equally dramatic friends. Other than her I love having roommates, being in grad school now I feel like I study/intern so much that if I didn't live with someone I could go days without speaking to people! I am disappointed that this list isn't very helpful. My roommate and I are actually moving in two weeks (sooner if we could) because the landlord refused to do anything about noisy neighbors (who it turns out are also small time drug dealers) despite having received complaints from us verbally, over e-mail, and in person for over three months. Before signing up for the January Cure I cleaned out my entire walk-in closet in mid-December- since I'm a grad school student that was the best time for me. For the first time I am storing summer clothes separately (I live in Northern Ohio, no jean shorts for a while!) which at first seemed silly because I don't have a ton of clothes. But let me tell you my closet is so much nicer now that I walk in and I know I can wear everything I see. Also in the spring I am looking forward to unpacking clothes and shoes and feeling like I got a whole bunch of new things. 5 Basic Tips for Decluttering Your Closet |

I am also dealing with a loud, inconsiderate (downstairs) neighbor. Speaking with my neighbors did not work, and eventually they stopped answering their door when I came down. I had to speak to management multiple times and it wasn't until I let management know that I would be contacting the police from now on until the issue was resolved that things finally started to get better. I agree with the several posts about trying to find them in a newspaper or local historical society. croake also seems to have found the original purpose, at least from looking at the lions from the back. I think it's also very sad that so many people have suggested getting rid of them- they are clearly part of the house's history in some context. Imagine if over the years everyone who moved into an old houses removed original molding, trims, fireplaces, etc that everyone is gaga over now. Not everything has to look like an Ikea catalog. The paint and the furniture look very pretty, but I cannot get over the checkered valences. I actually like the bold pattern but the shape just reminds me so much of the early 90's and "contemporary country" themes that were popular then. I think that with the dark paint color (also popular then) it is unfortunately dating the room. I think you could keep the curtains, just remove the large valences and get a nice curtain rod instead. As a toddler I actually figured out how to move a flimsy baby gate and tumbled down the basement stairs onto the cement floor of our 100+ year old home. And the thing was I was not an explorer or climber, I was a very shy kid who did not rough house or play in that way. So if you are thinking "My daughter will not climb the railing! She does not have that personality" that doesn't mean that if she wants something (in my case a baby blanket that was in the dryer) she will do just about whatever she can to try and get it. Was this place advertised as two-bedroom. I know that in a lot of cities a bedroom door is actually required for your landlord to legally call your space a bedroom. You may want to look into that and if it's the case the landlord will have to install something, or change the listing (and maybe reduce the rent to comparable one-bedrooms in the area?) You can also try specialty art stores such as Dick Blick's or Prism Art Supplies for unique shades of spray paint. These products are considered high-end and will cost more than something at the home depot, but the quality and color selection are well worth it. I am currently in grad school, and if someone bought me a $35 mouse pad I would have a strong desire to punch them in the face. When most kids are in grad school they are still building a foundation of the basics. From a design perspective I would much rather use that money for a set of matching lamps (either big-box or thrifted), a large print or piece of art to cover the start white walls that come standard with most apartments, or for a thrifting spree-for $35 I could easily get glass to make my own terrarium, an interesting pencil holder, a unique soap dispenser, a bottle opener, and have money left over. I think it's going to boil down to what you like and what fits in with your space best. I think neutral colors would be most likely to prevent a headache, but I would say unless you pick a color that you absolutely cannot stand you should be fine. Some new draw pulls/accessories/art around the desk would also make a big difference to how you see the space. Optimum Color to Paint My Desk? Good Questions |

I just moved into a new place with a similar bathroom, but the times are a faded mustard yellow with white grout, ahh! I went with a bold shower curtain that I already had, a mat that matches that (for less than $10 you can go to most big box stores and choose from dozens of colors) and some art above the tile. The art gives you a chance to DIY and you can look for frames, prints, shower curtains and window curtains at local thrift stores to cut down on costs (just make sure you wash EVERYTHING!) For some reason I see a really bold piece of art above your mirror, and sheers on the windows -let light in without flashing the neighbors! Decorating Help For Horrid Bathroom? Good Questions |

It sounds like you are the owner. It also sounds like you are over-thinking things a bit. Renters don't expect basement apartments to be perfect. That's why they are usually cheaper than ground floor and upper-level units. That big, beautiful window hidden behind the TV in your space really saves it, and it's going to appeal to someone who has been looking at dank dungeon units all day.
