I don't think this discussion is ridiculous, there's certainly merit in examining the ideas behind ideas. "Ridiculous" is a dismissive, shaming word, used to shut people up. But I don't think it's equal to wearing blackface, either. While there's nothing to be learned from wearing blackface, there are definite benefits to learning about all types of dwellings. I am also Native people, and I don't quite get the outrage. A teepee is a specific tent shape. Who are you to assume there's no education going along with it? Why not use it as a teaching tool for kids? You have to start somewhere. Learning about the ways people live or have lived has to start somewhere. I'm glad to see this post, as it reaffirms what I'm doing with my own daughter. I tell her that not only is it everyone in the family's responsibility to take care of our home, but it's also mine to make sure she knows how to take care of her own home, one day. Also, when she helps out, it frees us up to do more AT projects in the house! I think this kind of discussion certainly has its place among others about caring for a home.
