A railing would be required for this to be according to even Austin's codes. There is a reason they exist. Guess no permits pulled or inspected. Just guessing!

I think that you have hit one of the nails on the head as they say. It's about paying it forward and NEVER forget where you came from because it will help you remember where you are going! I was a divorced mother of three, abused and broke, and it was only due to the kindness of others, that we often got to eat, stayed warm etc. I will NEVER forget those days of rice and ice water for dinner, or pancakes for a week every meal.

I can only hope that taxidermy, your choice floor or wall, will go the way of the dinosaurs soon, never to return. Also the term tchotchke. Please, let's just call it what it USUALLY is, dust collector, and space invader.

You know how they say "Keep Austin Weird" as their city slogan......well here in Denver we "do as we want" but thanks for the help (unsolicited) btw. I love that you have done it your own way, it's works for you and you haven't gone into interior decorating debt to keep up with the ebb and flow of trends but have stayed true to who you are and where your are in your priorities. Nice to see a home not "staged" for the photo shoot. A home where "real" people live, cook and enjoy their neighbors company over the fence. We had better learn to grow our food again as the agricultural land of this country is being gobbled up by developers, and road systems. These folks will be fed, will you?

Neighbors can be problematic no matter rent or buy. Owning surely does not guarantee good folks next door! Having said that I do agree that apartment bad neighbors are the worst as they are CLOSE, no buffer zone in a lot of cases. Although loud is still just loud no matter rent or own!

I found a very tall narrow bookcase at IKEA in the dent and scratch section. There was enough room between the sink and toilet for placement. It now holds all my anti aging creams plus a few right size baskets to slide in hold unsightly loose items. It is VERY tall, 7 shelves, not deep but deep enough. Secured it to the wall and viola

It would seem that a question and answer session prior to signing a lease might help with some of these problems. I have to believe that yours is not the only unit and or building with a unit for rent in your area. Sometimes it isn't that the landlord is being harsh BUT they have been stung on someone painting that really had no business having a paint brush in their hand. It's nothing personal it's just the business of doing business. An ongoing open line of communication with the landlord and or management company agent is always a good first step. To perform electrical installations in your unit should be one of those "have a professional" kind of things. Improper installation can be the case of a fire and as we all know, just because you saw in on a self help video does not mean that all of us can do it. Some men should not be allowed to use power tools and some women should not be allowed to use a paint brush. Just saying, know when to get the professional!
