Agree with the couch dilemma with furry pets! Leather can be scratched, upholstery has to be covered up! Love the painted cabinet doors, what color is it? It really adds interest without getting out of sync with the feel of the house. This tour makes me miss Berkeley :)

Does anyone have a solution for roaches in the garage? My current solution involve leaving the light on at night so they don't come out. But I know that something has to be done. I don't like spraying raid or similar pesticides and sealing the garage didn't work.

What To Do with Mouse in the House? Good Questions

forgot to mention the yard... grass is already growing like crazy the past couple of weeks! My friends and I have been reporting that we've been having Sunday weed&mow-a-thons. Would like to eventually get to go hiking or doing something outside and fun (non-chores related) on those precious days off.

How To Clean Your House in 20 Minutes a Day for 30 Days
3/29/13 7:00 PM

I spend at least 20 minutes every morning and every night "straightening up" the house - picking up pillows and throws, feeding and scooping, doing dishes, putting away dishes and laundry, making the bed, etc etc. The porch needs to be swept at least twice a week with litter and dust reappearing a couple of days after previous cleaning. Pets definitely make it harder to stay clean and takes more time (at least extra 30 min a day) but of course they are worth it and i love them ;) But really it will take me at least an hour a day to keep my small house clean if I give up my Saturday clean-a-thons.

Need to donate the books tonight when I get home from work. Happy to report entry way transformation is complete with a place for mail, extra hook for keys and coats! now I can walk into the door without running into a big coat pile after moving them to the opposite wall. I have also grown use to the smell of vinegar after all the cleaning tasks, now I associate it with a clean house. All I'm looking for now is a metal dish drying rack that can go into the sink to free up more space on the kitchen counter. The cure has been a great start of 2013! But I am also ready to slow down since I had a dream about organizing this weekend =P

Day 19: Catch Up & Take a Photo Apartment Therapy January Cure
1/28/13 4:58 PM

Deep-cleaned bathroom last weekend before we had visitors. Bathroom is petite with one under sink and one medicine cabinet so have to keep up with organizing and throwing out the extras regularly, will do a quick check tonight. I didn't do the cord one last night but they are pretty well hidden. Still have to work every weekend to clean the house but it feels like I am not starting from scratch every week. It seems easier to keep up with the chores. The cure has up the bar! :)

Day 16: Give Your Bathroom & Medicine Cabinets a Cleanout Apartment Therapy January Cure - Day 16
1/23/13 6:28 PM

I used to have back dated piles of papers and bills around the house, about 5 or 6 years ago I worked on getting through them, since then I've been keeping up with it weekly or at least monthly. I will go in and i'm sure i'll find older bills I can toss. But I'm keeping most personal and holiday cards, not many people send them anymore and they make me happy!

Day 14: Get Papers & Files in Order Apartment Therapy January Cure
1/21/13 10:44 AM

Well said @PGF!

@mkat, I tear out the recipes I like and put them in a magazine holder ($2 at ikea). That gets put above my butcher block in the kitchen for easy access. A few of the magazines that have too many good recipes i keep it intact and save just a few. I also keep a multi-pocket file holder for other torn out pages and sort them like others have said. It's good inspiration when I need ideas, and also prevents impulsive buys. Some things just don't look as good a week or two later.

I just realize that I have a bookshelf in every room of my house. I guess I like them! Over the years moving has helped me cut down on papers and books, they are down to a manageable amount and every shelf has space on it. I do think as I move through different phases in life I cycle through topics, so I will look at reorganizing tonight.

SS=stainless steel
water and soap doesn't seem to work well on SS appliances

Day 10: Work on Your Goal Project Apartment Therapy January Cure
1/15/13 2:24 PM

Didn't get far last night other than moving a messy cork board from the entryway. I already have a place behind the door for shoes, and a functional (albeit not attractive) box for recycling. Still working out the coat situation. My project is to find a recycling spot for all the used batteries/lightbulbs that I have collected by the door that are not suppose to go in the regular recycling and cleaning the spider webs off the front porch light.

My home feels great after the wkd - all the glasses and dishes are moved closer so it will be much quicker to unload the dishwasher, all the dry goods (i have lots for making cantonese soup - good preventive medicine - haven't yet caught the flu) are organized with glass containers on their own shelf. Fridge is scrubbed inside and out, fur swept from behind the fridge. I think I might be ready for glass cabinet doors in the kitchen!

Anyone has a non-chemical smelling alternative to gooey SS cleaners? It doesn't leave spots but gave me a headache. The catch-all corner in the study was also cleared, clean, and organized. It will be nice to start having people over more often ;-)

Day 10: Work on Your Goal Project Apartment Therapy January Cure
1/15/13 2:21 PM

i have a smaller (8x12) and older (50s) kitchen that i am constantly debating whether to renovate (open it up to the dining room, move the wall to the garage, add new flooring). the contractors I've had over all want to gut it and start over. But the truth is that it's in good shape and functional (albeit a bit of a time warp) especially after i added these to the bottom cabinets so I can see what I have forgotten about that's hiding in the back

these drawers made a huge difference! I like the canning jar and work station ideas will see if I can make the space more efficient this weekend. Already cleaned and organized the space under the sink when we did that part about the green cleaners. Vinegar and water took all the cat nose prints off the windows! Thanks for the green idea!

Day 8: Weekend Chores - Flowers, Kitchen Cleaning & Make Yourself a Meal Apartment Therapy January Cure
1/11/13 1:01 PM

i have had a photo from antelope canyon printed on canvas and now it is in the living room. Would love to do another of the coast but it's a bit pricey, since I'm also trying to a few other things fixed around the house. I think I will find a photo taken from a long ago trip to the coast, that was taken on black and white film on my dad's camera, the one he used to take picture of us when we were little, print and put in a frame. It will make me feel like I'm on vacation every time I look at it.

Day 6: Choose a Piece of Artwork & Get Going on Framing It Apartment Therapy January Cure
1/9/13 12:06 PM

This will be a great task for me, a reminder to sit and be still for 10 minutes and let the ideas come to mind before jumping in . I will be doing that in the office and the dining room, both of which have clean floors thanks for the weekend cure! I like tidying up and keeping a clean house but the mopping and vacuuming are not my favorites, so I'm glad the cure gave me a boost to get them done. BF also lend a hand in vacuuming which was nice. This is my first cure and I'm loving it so far!

Day 4: Get a Fresh Perspective in
Just 10 Minutes Apartment Therapy January Cure

1/7/13 3:17 PM

I started putting cleaning supplies a couple of months ago in the bathroom and kitchen. Another helpful change I made is to tuck a small box under the entry way bench for all the junk mail to go as soon as I come in the door, it keeps my house clutter free and makes the stack of mail more manageable.

I also subscribe to a farm delivery service so that I have a box of organic veggies magically appear every few weeks. Less grocery shopping for me (saves time!) and I get to try new seasonal organic veggies. I tend to gravitate toward the same ones at the store when I go shopping. This way I never know what I will get every time I open the box and there is no excuse not to eat healthier!
