@brigittep72: Thank you for your nice comments. We love it too because it works so well for us. I used JRC cabinet builders located just outside of San Francisco for the drawings, field measurements and installation. They drew up the cabinets as I requested, even though they hadn't built some of the things I was asking for before this project. I started the design process on notebook paper and then I actually built a play kitchen out of cardboard boxes and tape! No kidding. What looks good on paper doesn't always work in real life. That cost sounds about right if that includes the appliances too. Hope that helps - Good luck! Maureen's Maximized & Upgraded Kitchen Small Cool Kitchens 2012 |

Since this kitchen hasn't been even updated in 60 years, you know they haven't done the proper maintenace either. Therefore, you have to budget between 30-50% for all the problems you can't see (old wiring, rusted pipes, and lack of insulation etc...) therefore if you want to updated it now and on a budget you need to resign yourself to living in a construction zone for quite a while. You would be surprised how well you can make due with just a coffee maker, hot plate and a microwave! If you gut it and see first what is really under your flooring and behind the walls, then you can start layer by layer designing and paying for the best kitchen you and the space can afford. Get a combo stove oven and use the space where the wall oven was for a full height pantry unit. I totally agree with the drawers instead of lower cabinets, they hold so much more, but with easier access. Also, check your local government or power company's website for old applicance rebates. Just take your time and pay as you go. This way you can afford a much more custom kitchen than you might have thought. Use that carpeting as a drop cloth to protect your floor and strip the wallpaper, pullout the appliances and then roll-up all that mess in the carpet! @gail_forcewinds : Thank you so much. The pantry pullouts and spice rack for the door were provided by my Cabinet Builder. But if you are not in the SF area then look for such things online at The Hardware Hut or The Container Store. Maureen's Maximized & Upgraded Kitchen Small Cool Kitchens 2012 |

I downsized to a Liebherr counter depth unit with freezer on bottom. The adjustment was easier than I thought. Large pizza boxes can't fit in either the freezer or fridge, but I just selected smaller boxes for the frozen options. The leftover pizza keeps better when you wrap it in foil anyway. I find that I shop just as often but buy smaller sizes, more varity and use my pantry more. Ketchup and oil based salad dressings do better when NOT refrigerated; and so do most fruits. I find I waste much less food than I used too with the larger fridge. Best Advice (and Brand Recommendations) for Downsizing to a New Refrigerator? Good Questions |

@compact, these cabinets were custom built by JRC Builders Inc in Oakland CA. The toe kick drawers are basically boxes (with roll-out drawers mounted in them) that the cabinets sit on instead of legs. Professional pre-planning is essential here so the cabinets can be leveled to support both the counter top but also allow the drawers to roll out freely. I requested that the screws for the handles be counter-sunk in order to max out the internal storage in the drawer. Sounds minor but it can be the difference between the cookie-sheet fitting in the drawer and the drawer being useless. On the large one under the sink, the builder suggested just a bevel cut on the bottom edge of the front plate; so I can slide my fingers underneath and pull. A much cleaner look, since this kitchen is open to other rooms. Good luck with your new kitchen! Maureen's Maximized & Upgraded Kitchen Small Cool Kitchens 2012 |

Liebherr refrigerators are fantastic. This is the second one we have purchased and they have out preformed any other brand we have had in keeping food fresher, longer. This model is the Bfi1061, it doesn't have the shelves inside the door for milk and condiments etc..., which is a bit of a pain. I have come up with cleaver ways around that, but for anyone else; I would recommend the model RB1410 which is roughly the same size but has the selves in the door. Good luck with yours and hope you enjoy it as much as we do. Maureen's Maximized & Upgraded Kitchen Small Cool Kitchens 2012 |

The counters are Pacific Pearl Marble from IRG in Brisbane,CA. They came with a polished finish but my tile guy Tommy from Vienna Tile & Stone suggested that he hone them to remove any micro scratches and the result was fantastic. Maureen's Maximized & Upgraded Kitchen Small Cool Kitchens 2012 |

I love that you took down the upper cabinets and created a kitchen you love while you wait to do the larger improvement.
