I would put the bed by the closet, but with the foot pointed towards the closet doors (leaving a space for them to open). Then, get a bookcase or a screen or some kind of divider to use as a headboard. This gives you some sort of separation between bedroom and living space. Aside from that, try to balance between everything doubling as a storage piece, and having lighter pieces. Stacking lexan side tables, for example will visually disappear and can be scooted to the side when not needed.

My front door opens onto my hall, so it is narrow as soon as you step in. I could use the wall to the left of the door (behind the door when it is open), but I need a VERY slim table. About 4 inches wide. Anyone have any ideas?

I am confused about the dining table shuffling. Was it the one in the first picture that developed a crack? I am looking at the World Market table you have as table #2, so I would love to hear if it was sturdy. Love the glimpse into the evolution of your room!

Count me as another before lover. All the personality has been stripped from the room, and it is now too light to sleep. As a warm and bright climate dweller, I covet dim light esp. in the bedroom.

If unusual colors hurt property values so definitively, wouldn't you expect the majority of posters to react with a "Yuck!" rather than a "Yay!"?

Seems pretty obvious that for every person who might be turned off by a wild or bright paintjob, there is another person who will buy the house BECAUSE of the paintjob. At least, in communities like SF that have a tradition of valuing and respecting eccentricities. I am sure the folks who choose to live in controlled developments do so precisely because they want conformity. Different audience.

BRAVO! Really, on all fronts. An excellent choice to feature this home, an inspirational focus on what is truly valuable in life, and a story we can all only hope to emulate when life turns out differently than we had hoped and planned for.

Thank you Karen, and Apartment Therapy, for being inspiring today!

I tend to be a little clumsy, due to severe near sightedness, so I look at little tables and start calculate how long it will take me to kick one across the room accidentally. Of course, guaranteed to have a glass of something that will stain on it at the time.

I do love the idea of questioning "The Rules", especially in a way that takes into account your specific situation. Bravo Courageous Coffee Table Eschewers!

Hotel furniture liquidators can have very reasonable prices for basic pieces like this sofa, and then you can get slip covers made or make them yourself.

If you were looking for something more quirky, I would say estate sales, craigslist and thrift stores, plus a whole lotta patience.

Miami!!! C'mon, there are no southern cities. If not Miami, Atlanta or New Orleans.

But Miami would be rockin'!

Sorry to ask this here but, are "sponsored posts" new? I don't think I have ever seen one before.

Thanks for marking it as such at least. I am pretty sure it is a major negative for me, but I need to think about that some more. The hyperbolic writing is certainly a negative.

Great fences, but Austin is starting to becoming the 2000s version of Seattle in the '90s for me. Enough already.

Sorry, crabby from being cooped up in a hotel room with 2 cats for days on end. Thanks Gustav!

Absolutely fantastic. This is exactly why I come back to AT. What a celebration of small spaces!

I am sure adjustments will be made as the baby grows to accommodate different safety concerns.

My greyhound really enjoyed a second hand crib mattress that I covered with fleece, and layered with blankets. You could create any look you want.

Greys really need to stretch out sometimes, with those gangly deer legs. They also can do quite a bit of damage with their big dog nails as they scratch around prior to laying down. Mine ripped up foam beds almost immediately, but not the crib mattress.
