Your taste is quite nice, and I wouldn't worry too much about your roommate thinking you're a snob, but everyone else has good advice re: practicality. Waiting to shop is a good idea not only for the reasons already mentioned, but also because you don't want to spend too much time moving in. You also might not know what kind of organizational equipment you'll need until you start classes. Feedback & Advice on Dorm Room Design? Good Questions |

Piping is easy, although it adds a lot of time to the job. It's just a long, thin strip of fabric wrapped lengthwise around cord, which you can buy at the fabric store. You sew the fabric around the cord, and then when you're sewing the larger pieces together, just put it between them. Putting the ends together is a little more complicated, but you can google instructions and images for that. Before & After: Erin's Chair Refresh on a Budget |

I'd replace the word "heavy" with "sturdy" in that first point. Solid wood furniture is lighter than particle board because it isn't as dense. The antique desk I'm sitting at right this moment, which used to belong to my great-uncle and which I hope to use for the rest of my life because it is so beautiful and well-made, is light enough to pick up one-handed. My trick is similar. For the first few days after I move, when all the rooms are looking kind of sad and empty and the lack of not-yet-activated internet is making me lonely, I keep myself company with a new book or video game (handheld, not console). It has to be one I haven't read or played before, because an old one might remind me of a former home and add to the melancholy, or it might not have my full attention. The time I spend reading or playing it distracts me and gives me a chance to bond with the new place. A Crazy-Sounding Trick for Surviving a Move |

I got it at Target! I know, right? I totally fell in love with it when I saw it, too. Unfortunately, it was several years ago, and I don't believe they have that particular one anymore. Diana's Sleeping in the Clouds Bedroom My Bedroom Retreat Contest |

Hey, this is Diana. Thank you for the comments! I actually don't know the name of the paint color, as by extremely happy coincidence, it was like that when I moved in. For what it's worth, though, it's a bit less saturated than it appears - the light filtering through the curtains makes everything a bit bluer. No, the post specifically says "this teen bedroom" and "their young client" but there is no reference to a teenager at the project page, or any indication that "Megan" isn't Megan Downing, one of the designers. Before & After: An Ocean View in the East Village The Sweeten |
