This is fascinating to me, since I'm currently considering a move to LA. I've always heard that you need to live near where you work...if I make the move, my job will be in Santa Monica, but I have a feeling I'd like living on the east side better.

Does anyone have any opinions about how far east would be reasonable if working in Santa Monica? I'm guessing Los Feliz and Silver Lake would be out of the question due to the long commute?

I have a Heywood Wakefield ant leg table. The original finish on it was shot, and it's an extremely difficult (and expensive) finish to reproduce. I did the same thing...painted it white, and I love it 1000 times more. The white with those lines looks fantastic.

Yeah...I get public transit...I know how to work it into my life....I just don't know if I can do it in LA. I'll likely be working in Santa Monica, on the dreaded transitless westside! It would be great to live there too, but it's sooo expensive. Just trying to work it out in my head whether i can do it or not. Work/gym/home/groceries have all been on foot for the last 12 years...just wondering if that lifestyle can work in LA, especially if my job ends up being in Santa Monica as I expect.

This is interesting to me...I live in San Francisco without a car, and I moved here from New York. All in all, I haven't owned a car in over 10 years!

But now, I'm considering a move to LA...is it even possible to live there (and have an active, rich life) without a car? While I like thinking I'm keeping my carbon footprint low, to be honest I'd love to have a car....it's just such an expensive proposition when you've been without one for so long!

SO, I know this is a can of worms, but can you live in LA without a car???

I wonder why they're called "art deco" as there's nothing deco about them. Regency maybe, but not deco.

This looks like a great shop -- one that I'd love to have in San Francisco.

One thing though, it would be nice -- now that you guys are covering much more than just the San Francisco area -- to have a shop's location listed above the jump rather than after. It's kind of a pain to click through and find that a cool place like this isn't accessible because of location. I'd rather just skip over those.

Just a thought!

In SF, I think the weather is a big factor.

I'm in the Castro near Dolores Park...perfect location. Walkable to Safeway, BiRite, and the supermarket-formerly-known-as-Cala. And easy access to Muni underground.

And sunny.

Holy crap! I do all of my filing at work in 3 ring binders and eschew filing cabinets entirely.

Meanwhile, I've been trying to figure out how to find a decent looking filing cabinet for home. Duh... I don't know why I never thought to file my stuff at home in binders. Sometimes my synapses just don't fire, I guess.

The Noguchi museum sells most of the Akari line...many of which I've never seen elsewhere. Plus, you're supporting the museum foundation by purchasing directly from them

I'd have to have more than one of those.

Well maybe I DO need to make a trip to Target to check those tables in person!

I'm in SF though, so the Brickyard Target will be quite a hike! Hopefully they'll have them here too!

Does anyone have those X tables? Website says online only, so I'm not gonna trek out to target to take a look....what's the finish like? Are they white, or ivory? Sturdy?

Thanks!!

Does anyone have these? I was in the store last weekend and liked the colors, but they seemed thin and insubstantial to me.

Does anyone have any ideas about custom sized (or just longer than ordinary) bathmats? I'd love one of the wooden mats from crate and barrel or west elm, but I have a long narrow bathroom. Normal sized mats are too small, doubling up or using a runner is too long. Any ideas???

I have a rental question and didn't know where else to look. I'm on the third floor in an old Edwardian building. The windows are filthy. Does anyone know if a landlord is required to clean windows that can't be reached by the tenant. I don't like the idea of hanging out the window and trying to do it myself, especially since some of the windows aren't operable. Any thoughts on how to get my landlord to pony up and clean them?

City Bakery in New York roasts cubes of sweet potatoes with chunks of pineapple and some cilantro. Just right.

Me, I'm making a galette of sweet potatoes and yams with ginger and lemon zest this year.
