when my mom was out of town, we subsisted largely on hot pockets and ramen. was always glad when she came home...

if i'm getting my nonstick properties from a seasoning rather than the nonstick finish... then... why would i buy a nonstick pan? this seems strange to me. that said, i don't own any nonstick -- just cast iron, carbon steel, and a couple SS skillets.

i got one for myself and one for a friend from this seller: http://www.etsy.com/shop/SawyerCeramics

i liked the styling of these better than some of the other ones i'd seen. just throwing another option out there...

not familiar with the idea, nor have i tried it, but if you do experiment, i suggest you go all scientific about it and keep a control group of each vegetable (maybe half the bunch, or another bunch that seems to be from the same age/batch/group) so you can compare? :) do report back!

Hmm, this does look tasty and actually pretty easy. I haven't been big on amaranth, so I'll have to try this and see if I like it better popped. :)

this is great! i never thought about better ways to store my cooking bacon in the freezer; i always just used a dull knife to pry a slice or three off the frozen block. (maybe i should have used my head.) thanks!

I would probably just keep a container like that and use it for storing leftover liquids in the fridge 'til I had a use for them -- thinks I wouldn't necessarily measure anyway, like the leftover juice from a can of tomatoes, or the end of a bottle of wine. Probably make up a cover for it.

So glad I inherited my mother's similarly dorky avocado green plastic canning funnel. It's way less edgy than the cones of parchment/foil/??? I was using before, or plastic cups with the bottoms cut out, and works so much better. :P

I only have one that my mother gave me, but I do use it whenever doing something splattery or floury. Especially oil splatters, since those are a pain to get out of daily-wear clothes.

I bought a single wire basket to use for "???", maybe towels or something. It ended up on the bottom shelf of my kitchen table, holding onions/shallots/garlic. I use them so quickly it doesn't matter that it's exposed to light... but it's handy, and a place to keep them away from the potatoes. I sort of like the look, but as hrprincessfiona pointed out, the ones you see around aren't exactly cheap...

I've never even thought about breaking them. My family always just shoved them into the pot and waited for them to soften enough to be gently pushed down.

My parents had a number of these sorts of things that were given away as swag by various companies. I don't know if companies still give them away, or what. Nowadays, I just use leftover wide (asparagus or USPS) rubber bands.

Agree with Tatterh00d -- I kefir'd all my milk and shrub'd all my berries (controlled spoilage!), but other ideas would have been welcome! We still had gas, so oven/stove things might have been an option for some people, though the idea of lighting fires in the already-oppressive heat was a bit daunting.

I'm also not completely sold on foodsafety's "this should be discarded" list, but better safe than sorry. I'll take responsibility for any illness resulting from my few-days-without-refrigeration greens and veggies (moved to the basement garage, some with damp cloths). It was a good reminder, though, that my tofu should probably go out.
