Minneapolis/St. Paul is a great area. We live in a massive house in a historic district blocks from shopping and food, and our mortgage is totally affordable, and we manage to max out both our retirement accounts. And we are certainly not in the 1%. Minneapolis/St. Paul has great theaters, museums and shopping. Plus, as a total bonus, you get two cities for the price of one!

Jdad, I am the EXACT same way. My husband is about to tear his hair out because I keep moving things from room to room until everything finds its perfect home. My house is in constant transition until objects annd furntiure pieces "tell" me where they want to be.

Where did you find that gold etagere in the dining room? It's so gorgeous. I live in Minnesota. Does anyone know where I can find a gold/brass and glass etagere?

Thanks!

LOVE! This is the best nursery I have ever seen. Period. I want to recreate even though I don't have a need for a nursery.

Great question and a quandary that has led to numerous disagreements betwen myself and my husband. I married into an entire household of his furniture. It's all well-crafted, and heavy, and expensive. However, it is all too matchy, and it is a shade of cherry that I've never been too fond of. Worst yet is the coffee table, also cherry, which cannot actually be used as such for fear of marring its surface. My dislike for these pieces (which I am sure is due in part to the fact that he and his ex-girlfriend bought them together) is compounded by the fact that the modern style of the pieces contrasts with the antique charm of our new (old) house.

I haven't found a way to compromise on these pieces. Honestly, I hate them, but because they were so expensive, I can't justify getting rid of them by selling them for a fraction on Craig's list.

I would appreciate any advice on nudging my auction/antique/flea market finds more into the focus of the decor. Technically, my pieces are "trading down" as they are generally purchased for bargains and are a result of hours of research, searching and shopping.

Great post. I bought a foreclosure and am getting frustrated at all the work that my place requires and with the lack of central air in this scorching heat.

1.) original woodwork throughout first floor.
2.) huge third floor for my husband's office (gets him from spreading paperwork all over the living room)
3.) great city neighbor but still relatively quiet street.
4.) history of the place (dates from 1912)
5.) gorgeous wood floors throughout (even though they all need to be sandblasted and polished).
6.) huge formal dining room that doubles as a great space for houseplants.
