I agree that seeing the floor plan would help. The pod confused my eyes, I couldnt tell what I was looking at to judge if I liked it or not. SO of course I prefer the after, because that was straightforward.

Of course I naturally am drawn to the RH one before I realize it is RH, damn my expensive taste. The World Market one is nicely affordable. I have a steamer trunk for a coffee table that is leather and wood with a cedar lined interior, looks a lot like something from RH but I got it from Matthus Brothers for way less. It was still more than I wanted to spend on a coffee table but I know it will last me forever even if I dont always want it as a coffee table.

When I first got my cats as kittens I thought I was so clever buying this litter box that had a little ramp in it, so they walk in and up this little ribbed ramp and the litter part is to the side. But my tiny kittens thought it was more fun to jump over the ramp so litter still got everywhere. And then those little kittens turned into monster maine coons and it was too small. I dont really have a problem with too much smell, but for sure if I could get a litter that didnt track everywhere! I have wood floors and I am constantly coming home to bits of litter everywhere! I've tried different litters, different mats under the box.

One thing that always surprises me is when people are shocked that I have a covered litter box.. I didnt realize people still had open ones, that seems nasty to me.

Oo a topic very close to my heart. I don't live in an apartment, but I went from living at home straight to moving into and owning my own condo at 25. I did not have the luxury of having hand-me-downs, no one in my family had anything to give me. I've not only been furnishing my place from the ground up but renovating it on a budget, going from tired 70s old person to 21st century 20 something. I've been blogging about it at www.myfirstpad.wordpress.com but shameless plug aside there are a few advice tips I'd give anyone wanting to really have a grown up place of there own

1) Save your money before you move. The reason I lived with my parents till I was 25 because I was waiting for a job where I made enough to cover monthly rent or mortgage but in the meantime I wanted to have money for furniture once I did move, so I saved. Even if this isn't possible for you to live at home, you can still make the effort to save ahead of time.

2)Be patient. I want it all, and I want it now. But I can't have it all right away. I keep a list and buy what I can when I can with a plan in mind.

3) Dont get cheap on the important things. You get what you pay for, so that cheap mattress or couch might be a deal in the beginning but doctors bills for back pain or broken chair legs later you will be sorry when you have to replace it. Also furnishings are an investment. Get something you can live with for awhile and that can move with you through changing places or stages in your life. You dont have to break the bank to get something you like and that is made well.

4) Shop around. I have found with enough internet searching and patience I can often replicate the look of more expensive items for much less. And sometimes you can get amazing things at unexpected places. I've spent money on pottery barn sheets only to find I preferred the ones I got at Target. I have this great rug, that I got form Kohls. Most people dont even know Kohls has rugs.

5) Ask for grown up things for holidays. My family does Christmas Lists, when I was in college I started asking for things like pot and pan sets and kitchen gadgets. They had to go straight to storage but when I moved it was like second Christmas.

How To Have an Adult Apartment on a Budget

I love before and afters where people work with what they have and on a budget, since that is usually the most some of us can hope for. I love this one. The grey, the subway tiles, it's all the stuff I like. I like how the upper open shelves left white recede into the background, makes the kitchen feel more open. Painting them would ruin that effect. It also draws your eye up. I am renovating a condo right now and the kitchen is a back burner project, I got it functioning just not super pretty yet, but I have a few big projects to do first. Will keep this as an inspiration. www.myfirstpad.wordpress.com

I had no idea there were stores! That would have made my recent and first Flor purchase much easier. But I really like my new Flor rug. I found them to have some really affordable selections, I liked being able to get something tailored to my space, and I was able to get 3 samples of my top picks for just 5 bucks which really helped my decision.

The Smart Cloth thing may seem to some ridiculous when you can just use eye glass cloths. Recently I got a touch screen desktop and wow the finger prints it gets after just one day. I wanted to get a new eye glass microfiber cloth and locally i found one, only one in pink, the only kind they had and the last one they had. So you basically have to order them anyway, might as well get something made for touch screens that it cute to carry around. I used to work with audio visual equipment and we had an air compressor for filling tires for the carts we used to haul stuff. We used to use it to clean out the vents and keyboards on our laptops, only thing I miss about that job.

Ive never given thought to how my room smells. I guess I've never been to a really bad smelling room or at least after I've been there awhile the room smells like my perfume etc so I dont notice. I think burning candles seems like a bad idea all around, maybe just carry some febreze or stay and nicer hotels lol.

Ive done my fare share of long hotel runs for school. When I was a graduate student my program was mostly online and then did mandatory 10 day residencies twice a year, both at very nice hotels thankfully. I had traveled a lot before that but only a few days here and there. Since these hotel rooms were going to be home base for awhile I completely agree with trying to make them a bit more homey. Scent not big deal as long as it doesn't smell bad, flowers eh not going to happen. My own products yes, hotel shampoo does not touch my hair. Putting everything away in drawers and in closet, setting up charging stations and putting my stuff where it is convenient totally. Hiding suitcase if nothing else to keep from tripping on it constantly. I still try to keep things tidy so that room service can still do their job and so that it is easy to pack up when the time comes. For longer stays there better be a table and chair or desk or something. Also if you have snacks or can go buy them nearby, I like to remove everything from the mini bar if possible and store my own waters etc in there.

Awhile back I was introduced to egg salad with medium boiled eggs and I will never go back. Simple simple simple is the way to go and since the yoke is still a bit soft you don't have to add as much mayo to get that creamy consistency. Just egg, little mayo, salt and pepper, I like to add some chives to the top and lemon juice (which seriously makes it). Also good with some micro greens open face.

My parents have been helping me renovate my condo. http://myfirstpad.wordpress.com/

It is my home and partially an investment property for them, although I own a larger portion of the share and pay the monthly mortgage, hoa, etc. Sometimes they don't agree with some of my choices, like the color I picked for the walls (they like light and neutral and had second thoughts about my dark grey) but in the end they almost always end up realizing my instincts were right. It's a learning process for both sides of the table.

I love all the textiles in this room, very masculine. Also the room has lots of textures throughout which gives it a lot of depth and makes it seem comfortable.
