So jealous of your ceiling fans! Did they replace existing fixtures or did you need to do all the wiring?

For city travel, I dress up to carry less. (A dress packs smaller than jeans and a sweater. Low heels or sandals pack smaller than sneakers, etc.) Synthetic versions of these can be packed in a tight little ball and survive the journey.

Make up the bed every morning, instead of leaving it in a heap. Not that I always do.

Also, I would bet that showering at night before bed (instead of in the morning--you can't have both!) would really help prolong freshness.

We did zucchini in our window boxes this year, though primarily for the blossoms (to fry--my husband's favorite).
And lots of herbs, of course. In the past, I've had great success growing lettuces indoors on a sunny window ledge. Next year: pole beans.

I try to avoid using the garbage disposal, but every so often I'll stick a lemon in there. Makes the kitchen smell great.

Skip the campfire, if you can bear it. But if you do have one, don't give into the temptation to burn your trash. We'll be bringing a couple of Java Logs on our camping trip this year--which I hope will be a good compromise--and using a backpacking stove for the few times we'll boil water for coffee.

Ditto on the crock pot method. I keep an old plastic salad bin in the freezer to keep veggie scraps and parmesan rinds until I'm ready to throw them into the pot.

You could put a couple of hooks up high on a wall, perhaps behind or above a door, and hang them up. Or swap them for duffles that can be stuffed in a drawer or under the sink.

Note that Preserve recycled plastic plates can be washed and reused several times (like next year's party). I also love the colors.

Or try to avoid plates entirely and serve those crazy cupcakes that are baked into ice-cream cones.

We built our drying rack into a 8'-wide window frame. The top is hinged so that the rack can flip up and attach to 2 little hooks on the ceiling. When not in use, we close it up and cover with sheer curtains. This solution accommodates nearly 2 full loads of wet laundry, which is great for a 3rd floor apartment!

I've done fruit, jam, and pickles, but have never been inspired to can vegetables. It just sounds yucky. Maybe it's a texture thing.

Any veggie success stories? And what kinds of tasty things do you cook with canned veg? I would love to overcome my phobia.

I suspect that vegetarian kitchens are lower maintenance. For the occasional veggie fry-up, we use newspaper. For the cat's hairballs: newspaper. For the rest: tea-towels and old bath towels cut up into rags. We developed this habit several years ago when we were strapped for cash and are now completely used to it. (No pats on the back, however, as we did use disposable diapers for Boy.)

The automatic dishwashing powder is a great product (so no need to buy the more expensive dishwashing gel in its plastic packaging!)

There are printable coupons for all of these on the Seventh Generation website.

We had the same itch and so decided to look for a condo that had not been updated (aka, without "granite countertops and new stainless steel appliances".)

My husband and I were lucky to find a really dumpy (but structurally sound) foreclosure at a great price and are planning to invest in green finishes over time...

2 adults, a toddler, a cat and some bicycles live very comfortably in our 900 sf. 2 bedroom apartment. (A couple of years ago, however, we lived in a 1200 sf. loft unit with an open floor plan and went completely bonkers.) For our family, having a few (small) rooms has been the key to our sanity.

My boyfriend (now husband) and I once shared less than 400 sf. with another couple that we didn't meet until moving day!

It was the most beautiful apartment we've ever had. We painted it white and did everything up like a ship's cabin. Lying in bed we could see all the way up sixth avenue to the Empire State Building...totally worth it!

I LOVE LOVE LOVE my hankies. I have an entire collection of vintage ones. When I'm really sick, I bring a couple of fresh ones along in my bag. But for everyday sneezes, etc. they are great. Plenty of folds. Way more absorbent than Kleenex. Fashionable. No ugly boxes sitting on the coffee table. And they don't rub my nose raw. Try it!
