The Awkward Files: When (and How) to Say No to Hosting Houseguests
7/30/14 04:40 PM

My sister's brother-in-law's family is Hispanic. They don't show up unannounced but they stay....and stay....and stay....without any consideration to anyone else's work schedule, plans, etc. It was really a point of contention at the beginning of their marriage but was simply like fighting a losing battle. How does one say to an in law, "get out of my house", without insult? Personally, I don't care if you're blue, pink or purple polka dotted. Consideration shouldn't be overlooked because of one's culture.

Let me pose another question? Is it appropriate to offer accommodations when you clearly don't have the space, etc to offer? I know it's the thought that counts but I have a family member who offered up a place to stay during a wedding weekend. Yet after inviting two more family members, really didn't have appropriate accommodations after all. I ended up sleeping on a couch, shared one bathroom w/five individuals and dealt with no air conditioning (in the middle of July-it broke a couple days before we all arrived yet the issue was ignored).

I'm so glad that AT has touched on this subject! A few years ago, my boyfriend and I moved to Florida. Our location is an hour from many theme parks, tourist attractions, etc. Even after explaining the distance from those areas we still had folks ask to crash at our place. I didn't have an issue with it the first couple times but after our guests spent an EXHAUSTIVE day(s) at a theme park, etc (sometimes with kids) it's just too much. We ended up being everyone's navigator, often dealt with late night chaos and were also unexpectedly stuck with any "off day" entertainment when the individuals/families needed a break. We learned how to say no very quickly.

I'm so glad that AT has finally asked this question and opened the floor for discussion. Everyone has their own story as I do, also. For many years, I made more than enough money so I could comfortably afford a house, buy food & necessities, invest and have some fun, too. Approximately two years ago, my position was eliminated from a very reputable company in the area where I live. I can say that I have never fully "recovered", financially and emotionally speaking. I've run the gamut from tearing through my 401k, applying for assistance, working my share of odd jobs and asking family for help. I've been forced to learn a new way of living and the bottom line is that living on minimum wage is DIFFICULT...period. Navigating assistance applications can be daunting and because of my assets (owning a home-by some miracle-still) it just wasn't happening. I can tell you that I have learned to live simpler, though, w/less trips to the clothing store, no more manicures/pedicures every two weeks, etc. Is it such a bad thing? Not really, but "living simpler" ends up going hand in hand with "what do I do now" in reference to the next utility bill, grocery bill, financial emergency, etc. I do believe the sad thing is that individuals that "do the right thing" such as going to school, working hard, etc can still find themselves in this situation. It constantly makes me think "what did I do wrong" and "what do I do now?"

Yes, buy the base and top separately. That's the easiest way to go when it comes to choice, installation, etc. I almost feel as if you could run into issues (difficult installation, extra cost, etc.) if you tried to do something more "custom" or "unorthodox". Good luck!

Well said, ShabbyDiva! Also, I thought the same exact thing as watergirl2012! Didn't the original Ikea creator's son just take over the reigns? I'd bet my bank account he doesn't know, which is also shameful!!!

I'm with sebFTL - The "gallery wall" idea would work. Plus, everyone's eye would be drawn to the art instead of the texture. There are a million posts here on AT where people use trim and other materials to actually create the "frame" part. Try it...I think it'll work!!!!!

I was thinking the same thing as Globaltastes! It does look like there are a couple of openings on the other side of the bed. Are those only window-like openings?

Since you have such AWESOME pieces to work with (color in your chairs, dining set and curtains), I would definitely keep the wall color pretty neutral. The art on your walls should contain the colors of your chairs, curtains, etc to tie everything together. Aside from that, a little layering and adding texture would help....a textured rug, furry throw pillows, etc. Catch my drift? Good'll have a blast putting it all together!!!!
