Beautiful work. I'm not so keen on the fabric choice, but it's great to see a piece carefully revived as you have this one. Before & After: Erin's Chair Refresh on a Budget |

Here's my main problem with books by color: for anyone other than the arranger, they might as well be wallpaper. If you want to share your collection, encourage guests to browse, etc, it helps to have a system that is not entirely dependent on your personal memory and associations. Amen, xerocada2. Arranging books by color reduces one of the best, cheapest, long-lasting information-storage-and-retrieval media in the history of humanity to mere wallpaper. Books organized by color always makes me think of Gloria Upson from the movie Auntie Mame saying, "Books are awfully decorative, don't you think?" Glad to see people representing for NELA, but why has no one mentioned the Gold Line? Minutes from Highland Park to downtown, or all the way out to east Pasadena (and, in 2015, Monrovia). I love NELA's transit options. (Also, diverse population, great restaurants, and fun stores.) A Renter's Life in L.A.:The Inside Scoop Apartment Therapy's Renters Guide |

The Los Angeles area has another Upholstery Class. It's in Monrovia through the Monrovia Community Adult School. The teacher has been teaching for decades. https://adulted.monroviaschools.net/asaponlinereg/courses.aspx?group=16 16 Cities With Upholstery Classes |

Quality Inn wants to hang out with the cool kids, but it's trying too hard. That lobby isn't an appealingly-designed space, it's a cheap hodgepodge of years-old trendhound gloms the likes of which one might find in the exurban McMansion of a "quirky" HGTV-addicted, DIY-crazed SAHM who just took up blogging. I second the call for articles on painting furniture. Also, I forgot to say above that the finished room looks lovely, painted beds and all. It's fun and fresh, and perfect for a teen. I like the before look better, but I defend the right to paint. You can't tell from the photos what shape the wood was really in. Stripping and refinishing is a toxic, nasty process. However, if the teen owner later decides she wants something more classy and grown-up, the original wood is still there, waiting to be uncovered and restored. I'm rehabbing & reupholstering a Victorian settee in an upholstery class. Now that I know first hand how much work goes into a quality upholstery job, and the importance of a solid, well-made frame and quality materials, I find I'm willing to pay more for good furniture. I agree with the earlier comment that the sofa has a certain charm as it is. If the wood is in good shape, why paint it? And a trip to the upholsterer could prove cost-prohibitive. If you're going the DIY route, you might try painting the upholstery. AT has provided a few links to tutorials. (I'd go for a nice gray.) Sofa Upholstery & Frame Color Recommendations? I made chalk paint using this recipe with some leftover Sherwin Williams satin paint samples. The piece came out lovely, but I'm not giving up my Annie Sloan Chalk Paint any time soon. In addition to durability and coverage, the great thing about ASCP is the lack of prep beforehand and the lack of mess after. The DIY version requires more prep and clean up.
