I agree with Loloan. I've never seen anyone use a stovetop kettle in my life. It's just not done here in New Zealand. I'd imagine you would be talk of the town if you reverted back to these rustic ways. Maybe I can start a trend... I use my electric kettle for boiling water before using it to cook pasta, potatoes etc on the stove.

I guess it depends on where they have been and for how long. We got back from a 65 day trip around South East Asia where many dishes come out different to what you expected. When we came home, we just wanted something familiar to eat. I was actually really itching to cook too but maybe I'm weird. 65 days without my kitchen was really hard for me!

Just confirming, these are just slightly twisted right? They are still round from a birds eye view? Not egg shaped as the website photos might suggest.

For those aren't sure about fish sauce, just buy the smallest bottle you can get and when you use it, use it sparingly. You don't want to scare yourself off too early!

I save the plastic containers and lids we get from take away meals and reuse them. They are perfect size for us. They stack easily and I can take them out of the freezer and move to fridge or microwave to defrost very easily. Like these ones: http://www.cater4you.co.uk/acatalog/500cl-take-away-container-s.jpg.

I just love congee or rice porridge, eaten all over asia for breakfast. I keep a pot of plain rice soup in the fridge and each morning I add chopped marinated chicken, garlic, fresh herbs, mushrooms etc and heat up 1 portion on the stove top. It's filling without being heavy. And very economical. 1 cup of rice is more than enough for a week worth of breakfast.

Our rabbit loves our apple peels. If I offer him a piece, he will take it and run away so that he can eat it in peace and without having to share any of it. I don't know where this rationale came from because we never make him share his treats. He must just be very suspicious of us.

1 nylon ladle. It's impossible to do a ladle's job with the other tools.

I've wanted a cleaver too after reading Fuschia's book. Haven't gotten around to it yet though!

Great subject! My parents made us chicken congee (rice porridge) or thin rice noodles with pork and broth.

I think those two dishes are very traditional Chinese or Cantonese magical elixirs reserved for the sick.

Now that I am a grown up, I still look to these comfort foods for when I'm feeling under the weather.

I've also talked about magical elixirs in my blog:

We're a day ahead in New Zealand, but I'm proud to report that I coincidentally ate a savoury mince and cheese pie for lunch yesterday. The first pie that I have eaten in about 3 months happened to be on Pie Day! My stomach must have known.

I didn't think anyone liked the smell, but they suffered it because the flavour of the fruit was good. I can't imagine why you would want to add the essence to anything? Unless it's more flavour than smell?
