Good grief people. Let's assume they painted the brick correctly....I'll bet they researched it before painting. What in the world is it about ugly wood and ugly brick that makes people think it should be left in its natural state forever? Ugly is ugly. And...there are ways to make it attractive that are not crimes. Before & After: Erin's Painted House 110 + 2 |

Good grief. Why does eveyone have to tell her what they would have done? If you have one, do what you want to do. I don't undertand giving people advice when they've already done the project and .....no one asked. Every piece of wood is not holy. Before & After: What a Difference Some Paint Makes! |

All of this proves that every body has an opinion about everything..including me. Exhausting. Seems like most people agree that constructive input and civil critiques are a positive. They're often helpful, thought provoking. A few "wows" and "love, love, love"s are fine but get boring. What I don't understand is the criticism of the author of this. I thought she was just raising an issue, open to discussion. To me, it seemed that some went out of their way to prove her wrong, or illustrate that she is overly sensitive. I don't get that, but so be it. I'm here to learn whatever I can and if I don't like some project, have no interest, I click off and return for a later post. What can it possibly benefit anyone to say "I hate that" or "ugh" but.. it's not against the law.....it's just rude. It must fill a need for those who think their taste is the only taste. 5 Things to Take Away from Any DIY Project Post (Even If You Don't Love It) |

I like griffonage (illegible scrawl or script). Saw a wonderful high end wallpaper with it. However, like everything else, it needs to be used carefully. For me, that would be with the help of a design professional, or not at all. Anyone can just throw it in the mix but that's not what I'm talking about. Takes talent and a creative, experienced eye to pull anything off well. Of course, you can just mix it in, if that suits you. I can't always afford professional help but the good designers can save you money and give you a better result. What's Your Design Pet Peeve? |

I will never have dark floors again. Dust settles on them continuously. You can't prevent that. Footprints show on them, not just dirt and doghair and spills. I found them impossible to keep clean. Dark Floors & Light Cabinets OR Light Floors & Dark Cabinets? Good Questions |

Many of those who posted about what you hate will have a ball hating them in the July/August House Beautiful. Let's see...chevron, book wallpaper, Keep Calm items, taxidermy, EAT posted on a counter, chalkboard paint.....and probably many more. I love the issue though. Any of these items, used by someone skilled at design can be a positive element. Difference comes when people just stick them up and don't have the talent to pull the design together.....IMHO! I like what I see in this magazine. I'm sure the people who have used them will not leave their rooms static. What's Your Design Pet Peeve? |

Plenty of people have no idea what's in good taste. If they knew better, plenty of them would do better. Or so I think. Unless they're just rebels at heart. I don't care what they do. I pay attention to my own spaces, try to learn. Sometimes you can learn a lot from a bad example. Ew, I Can't Stand That! Design Allergies |

Many of these things mentioned looked interesting the first time we saw them, but you can't stop everyone from falling for the same thing, copying it ad infinitum. The, all of a sudden....they jump the shark. Trends can't be avoided. It's what you mix them with, how you use them, that saves some of them. What's Your Design Pet Peeve? |

I recently posted several comments on this subject so I hate to say too much more. I don't post because I think I'm so smart and have all the answers. The opposite is true. I let the stuff drive me crazy for so long, wasted money I now wish I had, agonized over how to keep things under control, organize everything and keep it that way. I tried to figure out what made me buy things that I never used or needed. I'm smarter than that, but there I was. What a struggle! I was finally willing to face the truth about my habits and knew it would be hard to change. I worked at understanding over a long time, to gain insight. I had to. Each person responds to different things, I know. And you have to be ready to admit your lapses. Several times the lightbulb went off....not just in an intellectual way but in an aha! moment of really "getting it." Fighting the Feeling of "Should" |

This makes me laugh and helps me see some of the junk I've sprinkled around in a new light: my daughter's friend has a term for all the excess added.....shittery. I don't know if she coined that, but it's funny and very apropos. How Not to Be a Hoarder |
