My neighbor has two orange trees inside that make tons of fruit. We got one as a wedding gift 9 months ago which hasn't done anything yet, but it's still pretty small, and I still feel cheery optimism when I think of future fruits...

I recently tried to cover some small flower pots using the method, and I got tons of mold. In fact, the moss didn't grow, but only the mold... Looks like a lot of people have had success, so maybe I'll give it another go.

Who knows what style the missing valences were, but I bet they were basically boards held out from the wall (in front of the lights) on brackets. you could put anythign you want on the fronts of the boards - upholster them in cute fabric, tack on some driftwood, hot glue dozens of toy cars - pretty much anything. Just a couple small brackets, and a board (or two) long enough to span the fixtures, and you can take it form there!

Get a cheery rug, and save your pennies for the reno. It's not a super attractive kitchen, but it really isn't horrible, either. You'll get used to it in a few weeks. Paint or contact paper the tile if you must. A year isn't that long!

@Aebell--

I have an Eames side chair that I sit in to sew, and a second one at my computer (I am so spoiled!). The computer chair is from Modernica (original molds, original material, not officially certified), and it's on a wheeled adjustable base, which makes it pretty awesome. The sewing chair is the official Herman Miller version, with a wire base - it's nice, but sometimes just not the right height. I really recommend an adjustable base for office use.

I love the feathery wall art!

I have quartz tops - they're tan, white, and dusty rose, with cobalt blue flecks. They hide every crumb, in every color. I wipe and wipe and wipe, and still later find week-old food patches... But at least they always look the same! (BTW, I love how durable they are - hot pans straight from the oven go right onto the counter with no ill effects.) When the time comes, I will pick a slight pattern for my counter tops - a little something to disguise streaks, but not so much I can find splats.

@Adonuts-

I've lived with a cream kitchen for the last three years, and I haaaaaate it every day! There are always coffee splatters, and random food, and smudges of all sorts all over everything. I do clean, I promise, but I just don't have it in me to do a full soaping & scrub down of every cabinet every day, and so it always looks vaguely unkempt. Definitely going darker when I have control of my kitchen design!

This renovation is really beautiful (and looks expensive enough that the family can probably hire out the cleaning, so, go white!)

I'd do a pale gray on the walls, and leave the moulding white - nice and neutral, and not too busy, but still with a little pop. (I'd do the crown, base, and windows white too, if it were allowed.)

Lots of good ideas here - just wanted to add that making things match will do wonders in such a small space. Sheets, curtains / blinds, art / tapestries, even book covers - the closer these all are to the wall color (I'm assuming you can't paint since it's a rental), the larger & more peaceful everything will seem. White would be great, or pale blue, or another shade of gray. And definitely move the curtains inside the window frame.

I've had carpet tiles over carpet in a few places, and it works ok - just duct tape the seams, and know that if you roll chairs around a lot, you might need to retape them.

As for carts, all of the above suggestions, or find a table you like and put casters on it. Or stalk rich people until one of them gives you their Aalto tea cart! Love that cart...

If there is already a concrete slab, you may be able to just do a topping slab that's 2" thick or so. This is still quite a lot of thickness to add to a floor. If you want it to be flush with your other floors, you'll probably have to do some serious demolition. (It is unlikely you'll be able to clean the grout from the tiles off of an existing concrete slab.)

Concrete floors require periodic sealing every couple years, depending on traffic. (Bare concrete stains easily, and would absorb any oils or strongly colored food spills.)

And suzee's right - it's very hard, both on your feet and any dishes you might drop...

Plywood floors feel just about like hardwood underfoot - maybe a bit cushier. (I grew up in a partly unfinished house with a plywood-floored bedroom - we got to draw all over it, and it was awesome.) Make sure you get a nice enough grade that the faces are pretty smooth if that's the look you want.

HDF is another option - like MDF, except instead of medium, it's high density fiberboard.

Lonzebra sheet vinyl by Lonseal is almost the look you want - maybe a little small, but there is a black & white color.

I replaced the seat in my last apartment, because it was a different color than the toilet and drove me nuts. I've been meaning to replace the seat in this apartment, because it's kind of broken - but I haven't gotten around to it in three years... (it's kind of odd, and I've never run across one in my random trips to the hardware store).

It would never occur to me to replace it for sanitary reasons.
