Over the weekend I was telling a friend how baba ghaboush is one of my top three favorite food items. I love late summer when my garden is overgrown with eggplants. Appx 3/4 of them go towards some variation of this dish. Recipe: Baba Ghanoush (Eggplant Dip) Recipes from The Kitchn |

This is such a complicated topic that academics and the popular press have been discussing for years in Bolivia and the United States - why is it only now that it has become fashionable to discuss this? As noted, this is not as simple as are Bolivians being priced out of a staple food product (they certainly are) versus can Bolivian farmers now feed there families? Question of cultural relativism, economic imperialism, and food justice really need to be addressed when discussing this issue. Is It Still OK to Eat Quinoa? |

The list is ridiculous - sounds like a J Peterman catalogue - lots of superfluous language without really saying anything. That being said, I like the idea of cajeta and anise; will have to try it this weekend! Predicting the Next Big Thing: The Top Trends and Flavor Forecasts for 2013 |

Maybe I am misunderstanding what constitutes a "dinner party," but I thought dinner parties are on the rise... arent all the cool kids having them? Seriously, though, we probably have one dinner party a month and go to 2-3 more. Popular culture has led me to believe that this is quite common for most people? My 2.5 year old will eat any and all cheeses - I actually assumed all children would? HMy son actually prefers the expensive cheeses; however, I cannot get him to eat a vegetable to save his life. Eh, I have given up trying to understand toddler's food choices and life decisions in general. As Ralph Waldo Emerson so succinctly said, "A child is a curly dimpled lunatic." For me, living in Chicago isnt just about being able to "do" something unique or different every night of the week. Being able to bike, walk or take transportation every I want to go, is a major factor; as is the diversity - socio-economic, cultural, etc - of my neighbors, friends, and colleagues. yes, I second everything @vykim said about Chicago. I cannot imagine living in a city where 60% or higher your salary goes to housing - I am genuinely curious how anyone can live like that?! Both renting and owning in Chicago has never been more than 20% of my salary (and I am certainly not wealthy). Living In The Most Expensive Cities: How Long Can We Keep This Up? |

I am fortunate that in my neighborhood (Chicago) I have several different grocery stores within 2-5 blocks. I could not imagine having to travel long distances unless ABSOLUTELY necessary. And I am genuinely interested in knowing what ingredients/food stuffs you cannot find in Chicago and must drive to Niles for instead? Doesnt have Chicago have everything? This is FASCINATING to me as I grew up (1985-1996) in "Harvey Park," and I would have never thought it would turn into this. This was a working-class neighborhood with a predominantly Hispanic population. I am super curious to know where all the families are moving to with this gentrification push. @missyv - I *love* Bosnian food as well - totally underrated. Fortunately, there are a few spots in Chicago where one can find good Bosnian cuisine. Also, I third (fourth?) Greek and Spanish food. It is Leslie Mark, a furniture designer and interior decorator from the 1920s and 1930s. There are several blurbs about him in the New York Times from this period (1929-1936). This does not help with specific information about the end tables, but at least it is a good start for the dating it. Help Identifying Vintage End Tables? Good Questions |
