Cute, but how would you store this or transport it? It would only be good for someone who lives in a dust-free environment with enough space to keep sewing supplies out at all times. I use a magnetic pin cushion, and I love it's convenience. If anything is stray on the table after sewing, I can easily just swipe the magnet over it, and my pins are easy to grab, because of the shape of the "cushion." The article doesn't seem to consider the fun and excitement of the DIY movement and the fact that people are interested in learning how to do things like sew, knit, refinish furniture, etc., that many people took for granted knowing back in the 1950s. It also doesn't consider that people are more mobile and a lot more people are living in rentals due to the high expense of ownership (and being mobile). People are also living in much smaller spaces as urban centers grow, and there's nothing like living in a small space to make you more intentional about how you decorate. Instead, the writer sort of dumps on people who love finding the "right" things for their spaces. Should anyone lose sleep over the color of their door? No, that seems silly. And, I'll admit that I do take a lot of pride in working on my apartment and other projects, and if I devoted half the time I spend looking at design blogs, and other things related to decor, at the gym, I'd be in much better shape, but I'm pretty sure that the use of the "decor addiction" is unfounded. So, then who sold our addresses? Was it Elle Decor; Country Living; This Old House; HGTV Magazine, Martha Stewart Living...? All of the sudden I received my first copy of RH earlier this month I subscribe to the aforementioned mags. And, yes; that dual set of catalogs full of items I cannot afford was massive!! I would love to leave NYC, but my desired destination, NH, has so few jobs and would require that I have regular use of a car (for work, grocery shopping, etc.). Plus, the specific location in NH where I'd like to live is actually relatively expensive, and apartments tend to be in sub-divided homes, rather than "proper" apt buildings like my (character-filled) Manhattan rental. I don't trust an apt listing that doesn't include pics of common areas (kitchen, bathroom, living room). That makes the BK share you shared a bit scary. Available Housing: Apartment Shares, Rentals & Sales The Friday MORNING Scavenger |

Great job! I looked at the step-by-step via the link to your site, and you clearly took care with this project. I would have preferred the green to be more solid (as opposed to milky/distressed), but I think you achieved what YOU were going for, and you did excellent work. I love the top, and the reveal of the brass key holes. Having done similar projects, I know how much work it is, so I sincerely congratulate you on your hard work and a wonderful restoration of a nice piece of furniture. :) Before & After: Craigslist Dresser Gets a MakeoverMy Passion for Decor |

I'm a renter in NYC, and people move in an out of my building fairly frequently, because we're close to a graduate/professional school campus, but I still find it's rewarding to meet my neighbors. I don't need to know everyone, but it's nice to know a few people. We share tools, sign for packages, buzz guests in, and, on occasion, I've sat for a neighbor's adorable dog. We also talk about problems in the building and how to get help from the management company, etc. That's been really helpful! Shy Guide: Easy Ideas for Meeting More Neighbors |

AT: PLEASE stop with the multiple closeup vignettes! It really is terribly annoying. I'm the biggest dog lover on the planet, but we look at this site to see apartments and decor. That puppy is seriously adorable, too... I mean really the best... BUT, how can the editor of this story justify the silly closeups and then not really show the whole place? It's not just this post; it's a pattern that's emerging and disappointing readers. (And, I say this because I really like AT, I enjoy the site so much, and have come to expect good things.) To be clear, I wasn't commenting about the breast lamp--only the pieces that are porn, or reminiscent of porn. I didn't mean to "hijack" things. The home is clearly quite nice. The trio of posters seems to overwhelm the tv room, and I don't think "grandpa made them!" changes that. Charlie26, it's not so much the child "seeing" the posters, it's the idea that the parents made them a part of the home's decor and that they are there hanging over her and all of her friends/guests every time they're hanging out and watching tv. These folks obviously have thought plenty about their daughter's welfare, though. Robert: great point about the Bratz dolls. Those things are horrible. Robert & Hannah's 'Casa Eclectic' House Tour |

Am I a prude for being put off by the image of their sweet little child watching tv underneath posters that appear to be advertising soft-core porn? And the image of the woman with the breast implants above the credenza in the entryway was a little disturbing, as well. Maybe I don't "get" it? I'm fine with the human body in art, but I'm not so comfortable with semi-pornographic poses and images decorating the home of a small child. What do others think? I don't think that the pieces in the pictures are the pieces in question. Mission style is a very specific look. The table in the right photo is what I'd call a farmhouse table. Quality or Style: When Compromise is Necessary, Which One Wins? |
