It's not so much urban vs suburban for me, but rather which particular city or suburb. There are awful cities and wonderful suburbs and everything in between. I think most of us dread the idea of living somewhere without beauty and life. It's those places dull people and people without options end up in. Will Gen Y Ever Move to the Suburbs? I love lists like this. There's no wrong or right, it's just a fun and thoughtful way to discuss what makes a place great or not so great. I'm compiling a list of the worst people with whom to hold an intelligent conversation. Top 20 Most Miserable Cities in America Forbes |

My biggest challenge is our entry way. We have four children and live in a small townhouse, and, much like an earlier poster, our entryway is often a mess with shoes and jackets and bags all over. I'd like somewhere to put 6 to 12 pairs of shoes and 6 or more jackets neatly! No closet, but the area is a long hallway. I'm thinking hooks and some sort of shoe storage. Landlines are just easier to use with kids. We have one on the main floor and we use that number as a kind of call center. It doesn't get misplaced, it doesn't have bad connections, and it is easy to hear. And woe is the child who doesn't answer it when I'm calling home to check up on them. 6 Devices That Can Help You Trim Your Monthly Bills |

With good savings and good timing we managed to buy a small townhome in Old Town Alexandria right outside DC. Everything is expensive here. But our jobs are a quick drive across the river and we did not want to spend our time commuting. Living In The Most Expensive Cities: How Long Can We Keep This Up? |

As a family of six, you'd think we wouldn't have too many leftovers! But as everyone has different tastes, and one of us is a vegetarian, while several of us love meat, we have to be careful not to let things spoil uneaten. I too have found that shopping more frequently, up to once a day, is a big help. I rarely buy fresh food other than fruit for any meal but the one we'll be eating that day or the next. We keep pantry food like pasta for the days we don't have leftovers or anything fresh planned. Plus lots of frozen veggies.... 5 Ways To Combat Food Waste At Home |

Dang, what a great condo! I love it when people raise children in environments generally considered difficult. We don't all have to move to the suburbs and live in tacky homes designed completely around children. Children aren't hot house flowers. They can live in any number of environments. It's most important that we let them know how much they add to our lives, not detract. Zev & Michal's Bold, Bright City Condo House Tour |

I make a similar vodka pasta, though in my case vodka needs to come first in the title because I add at least a cup of it. I even like to "refresh" my leftover servings with a swig added to my bowl. My red wine with chicken follows the same pattern. Recipe: Penne alla Vodka Recipes from The Kitchn |

Being a military family and being in a career that moves...a lot.. let's see...since marriage - we've lived in seven states, four of them twice. Twice overseas. And now back to DC. So at least 14 places we've had all of our stuff completely unpacked and pictures hanging. This doesn't include my own two tours in the military before marriage, the various moves within tours due to space on base becoming available and all the dorms plus growing up in various homes in the US. We're great at moving in a place quickly! How Many Homes Have You Lived In? (And What Makes a Home, Anyway?) |

Yup. We're military and we've rented sight unseen several times. In fact, we just bought sight unseen! I was very nervous, but the home is as advertised. I'm not looking for my dream home at this time. I just wanted something in the right place without any major problems that can house a family of six. Certainly makes life exciting! At first, I thought this article was going to be about following trends - ripping out perfectly good bathrooms to replace everything with something more trendy. I think we get into a place where we think we can't be happy unless our homes reflect exactly what we like at the moment. And I'm curious, as a new home buyer, is anyone ever "done" refinishing their homes? Or do we always have a project going on? Fighting the Feeling of "Should" |

Old homes with lots of weird angles and cubby holes. We move too much to really put in the time to find and live in something like that. Maybe one day.... What Do You Covet Most From Other People's Homes? Reader Survey |
