Late coming to this....Breville is the only one that has worked out for my family and the only plastic that I can see is what frames the filter...easily removed.

A bit off topic....My house is all Douglas Fir and the finish on the floor won't hold up to my family and their use of furniture. Pads on chair legs constantly fall off. What is a really durable finish for a fir floor?

I would leave the ceilings and walls and concentrate on changing the look/feel of the place by updating the furniture and maybe flooring? Also, trim can be messed with/painted to lighten up/change the feeling of the rooms. I have seen some really bad paint jobs on that sort of paneling, and since it is kind of indicative of a chalet, I would keep it. But a switch out of furniture (modern maybe) will offset the piney look.

I would wait on the kitchen. There might be some really interesting things to do with the cabinets... I might consider a white-wash sort of thing on the cabinets. Whatever happens to the cabinets, since they seem like they will stay in some form...will lead you to whatever happens to the countertop.

As for the bathroom. I would ditch the vanity and cabinet completely. Get a white pedestal sink. That will help it feel less claustrophobic. Keep the floor tiles. I can't see the walls, but I do have a soft place in my heart for that flecked linoleum. (I did a retro kitchen with it). Find some shiny chrome things for the bathroom (shelves, handles) and let it shine. The floor will look like it belongs. But firs, ditch the sink. Its an easy install and not too expensive.
