Last year I was lusting after a pair of arm chairs that were completely out of my budget. Not only were they too much money, but I knew that if I had them I would essentially be married to these chairs, and while, yes, these are my tastes now, I certainly know that my tastes have evolved in the past 15 years (I'd like to think improved, but I'll leave it with the neutral verb evolve.)

Instead of those unattainable chairs, I found a pair that were produced by a less-prestigious manufacturer.

It's a balancing act. I'm still holding out for the super expensive wall shelving I have my eye on. Saving, saving, saving, and one day I'll get there.

Here's more information on the health hazards of tile reglazing/refinishing: http://blogs.cdc.gov/niosh-science-blog/2013/02/bathtub-refinishing/

I seemed to remember that there was a Home Depot tile-refinishing kit that was highly, highly toxic and recalled in many states (but not all, or not all stores followed the recall.) I can't find anything online about this specifically, but this CDC article talks about a product implicated in deaths of "professional" refinishers: http://www.cdc.gov/mmwr/preview/mmwrhtml/mm6107a2.htm?s_cid=mm6107a2_w

Seriously, a rental??? I would embrace it. And, if I were your landlord, there would be no way I would let you do a tile reno on the cheap.

Tile refinishing is a joke. Someone did that in a condo I once owned. Not only did it fool you for about .03 seconds, the coating started to fail. I would have rather had the uncoated tiles, no matter what the color.

Was JUST thinking the same thing, only I couldn't remember the name of the line :-).

I think this falls under the fashion rubric: if you are old enough to remember it the first time it came around, then you are too old for the second!

Don't like the bouillon or dye-in-the-faucet ideas. With my luck, that would just become a huge mess for me to clean up later. I'd also be worried about the shower smelling like broth for days.

I love the the googly-eyes idea, and the meatloaf-and-mashed cupcakes sound cute and delicious.

This probably isn't an option for most people, but several bulb shops in the "Lighting District" (basically a few blocks surrounding the Bowery in NYC's Chinatown) sell sockets on a length of wire by the foot or yard. Buy that, close off the ends, buy bulbs, and you are good to go.

Yeah--wondering about sourcing here. The same thing could be achieved with sheets of Pantone paper.

Also wondering about longevity.

Charlie, my thoughts exactly. Sounds like you need to enforce some rules: drawers stay put; no eating the bedrooms and definitely no jumping on the beds (really? you allow this?)

Neither my parents' nor my grandparents' bedrooms were "off limits" other people's drawers and personal items very much were. I also don't remember the bedrooms being a particular draw--probably because they were not viewed as playrooms by anyone.
