mdeathstrar, my previous vacuum was a dyson 14 low reach (purple and red model). The Miele arrived before I sold the Dyson on craisglist, so I was able to test them side by side; whether I was getting a bit obsessive or merely needed to make sure the purchase was a solid one (the vendor has a generous return policy and it would have gone straight back) is for you to decide. I was extremely gratified, and very relieved, to see that the Miele needed one pass to pick up the Capture carpet cleaner I had spread out for this purpose. (Capture is a somewhat thick, white powdery substance, in case you aren't familiar with it. It is supposedly a really green, healthy product and good for people with carpets and dust allergies.) The Dyson, which unlike the Miele sounds like it would suck up the apartment below me, needed four or five passes to get most of it up, six to get that section of the carpet as clean as the one I used for the Miele. I bought a Miele Capricorn last month, in part because of some of the comments made here. I am thrilled with it! It's a pleasure to use, so quiet that I can't believe it, and has really helped to relieve my allergy symptoms. Of course, the purchase price was breathtaking-- but I am convinced that it was well worth the investment. Erin, I bought it online from Witbeck (hope it's ok to say this; I am in no way connected to them nor will I benefit from the mention), which offers a 12-month interest- free finance deal and a warranty. Excellent customer service, to boot. Apartment Therapy New York | Miele Canister Vacuum: Pisces S5280 In the Test Lab |

Just wanted to say that I appreciate the exchange of information taking place here. I almost shuddered when I saw this post, fearing what I imagined would devolve into a nasty argument concerning "values", rather than value. The comments have instead been thought-provoking and quite helpful. Glad to see that I was wrong. Apartment Therapy New York | Hastens Beds |

I echo ValHalla's comment: open shelves would be a nightmare in my apartment. I really think that unless you have superb ventilation in your kitchen and a full-time housekeeper, this is an idea best left to editorial spreads.
