Don't fight it, go with it.
I have similar problem with my kitchen and in my experience no matter how you try to make it seem light, it won't be. Too many light colors will only make it seem cold, so you rather try to make it a warm and cozy nook. I would suggest warm colours like orange or terracotta, at least on some of the walls, and lots of soft fabrics with nice pattern. And table/floor lamps too, as suggested by others.
