I'm all for simplicity and cutting out the clutter. Great piece, Greg!

I would LOVE to do this (or something like it). And my wife would kill me, for all the abovementioned issues. Oh well.

Yeah, it's funny how this fear of layoffs has led so many of us to keep things as neutral and corporate (keep your head down and don't stand out) as possible. I've been fortunate to have gotten leeway in the past, but I was just moved across our campus (and my old blue art department walls were painted a lovely beige for the billing department that moved in).

And now that I'm looking to move on from here, I'm thinning my personal stuff, without being obvious that I'm getting ready to jump ship. I need to stay here until I get the next job offer (in what, six months? A year?)

Orange! I'm keeping it alive in 2013. I've paired bright orange with pale blue in my home office (I've got bright medium blue with a bright orange stripe in my work office, much to my boss's chagrin), and my wife wants to pair a dark pumpkin with a medium/light purple in our living room.

Is it too late to buy an orange car?

I enter into every CL transaction (as either a buyer or seller) assuming the other person will be a flake. When I'm right, I'm not disappointed, and when I'm wrong (like meeting the awesome couple from whom I just "adopted" a great German Shepherd) it makes me feel a little better about humanity.

But I still refer to it as "Flake's List".

Awesome idea! I'm the dad of the house and I toy with graffiti designs. Maybe I'll get some masonite and "decorate" my office!

Crap. I've been fighting with a powerstrip on the floor behind my nightstand for a few years. Can't believe I didn't think of it myself!

After 20 years of messy desks, last year I decided to enact a "clean desk at the end of the day" policy. So nice to start the next morning without an obvious reminder that I have a pile of work.

All I know is that I feel a lot calmer, at least at the start and end of each day.

My wife and I got (re-)hooked on documentaries when we started up our NetFlix account again.

Recently saw "Give Me the Banjo" narrated by Steve Martin. I grew up in a bluegrass family (one uncle hand-builds banjos; another plays professionally) and I discovered I didn't know a THING about where this instrument comes from. Strongly recommended to musicians (of any style) and anyone interested in American History.

Netflix may have its shortcomings, but you can't say there isn't anything interesting to watch!

The Roku (esp the tested 2 XS unit here) is an awesomely simple unit. Our family decided the cut the cable this summer, and while my kids' Wii lets us use Netflix, Hulu, etc. in the living room, the bedroom TV needed a box. I tried my PS3 but getting the whole system to work drove my wife nuts (she's NOT a gamer). I surprised her with a Roku 2 XS on a trip to Target (impulse buy), and she loves the simplicity of the navigation (compared to the Wii). She's even been experimenting with the other free channels that are available through the box, and keeps finding more things to like about it.

And anytime my wife is happy, *I'm* happy.

My wife insisted on a high-end glider. I went along with her to keep her happy. Now, eight years later, that glider is MY "Archie Bunker TV Chair" that no one else sits in, for fear of the wrath of dad. SOOOOOO comfy. I'm glad I listen to my wife.

Having kids has gotten me much more interested in meeting the neighbors. Not only am I interested in my kids' safety (child molesters, anyone??), but it's paid off in that good neighbors keep an eye on my kids (and the other neighborhood kids) when they're out riding bikes, playing street football, etc. And I can usually get the REAL story when there's a dispute among the kids.

I agree with the dog comment above, especially if you're not ready for kids. Well, who's EVER ready for kids, really?

I like the fact that not all of these solutions relay on wallspace. I'm currently working out the bugs on a small desk in my living room, so that I can work in the evenings and still interact with my kids when they're watching TV or playing videogames. Any "against the wall" solution means I have my back to them, which sort of defeats the purpose. Thanks for throwing out some ideas I can try!

My boys (3 years apart) have shared a room since #2 moved from a bassinette in our room to a crib. We're in a four bedroom house now, and I've tried giving them their own space, but they always end up together. Yes, sometimes one wakes the other in the middle of the night (and then EVERYONE'S miserable) but mostly it works.

So part of the equation is the kids themselves.

As an (overworked and underpaid) Art Director, AMEN! To you freelancers: I try to say "Thank You" every chance I get, I just don't have a lot of chances. The fact that I keep coming back to you is sometimes the closest I get to it.

Love the tips on pushing your comfort zone. I have to do that myself. I recognize that sometimes I don't know what I want, but I DO know what I DON'T want. Give me choices and I'll (probably) find something to be happy with.

As someone who's torn apart and rebuilt/refinished a host of stringed instruments, I love the look...if it fits with the room.

I'm going to work on getting my wife to let me paint her old out-of-tune upright when we move later this summer. Although I'm betting she'll be in the "leave it alone and don't be stupid" camp.

I just don't know why this never occurred to me before!
