Hey emtee--

We sometimes have a dip--usually based around that brown fermented fish stomach paste--but more often have it without anything at all.

I recently went multi-generational Asian (aka I moved my parents in) and so I now have a backyard growing these things as well. We should have a seed trade. :)

The most recent "weed": bitter buds on a branch of some sort

Mary Wynn, these are a little different from the plates of vegetables they give you to add to your pho (or stew) at Vietnamese places.

Growing up in a Thai household, these plates of vegetables were a fairly common occurrence. Our standard household joke was that Mom was actually serving us weeds from the backyard and calling them Thai vegetables.

Pickling! Yes, you could try canning at-large, but I've been fascinated with pickling lately. It's cross-cultural, and there are a wide varieties of types. Pickled veggies are great as a snack or garnish. I fully endorse pickling.

Mom always used cucumbers when she couldn't find papayas that were green enough.

Along the same lines, lebne is a pretty phenomenal smear on sandwiches.

Let me start this by saying: I loved grocery shopping in Kansas City. I miss grocery shopping in Kansas City. And finally--no, I'm not really sure that I would bother with a service like this.

That said, I'd imagine that they're making that trip for multiple people all at once. Instead of a dozen different people making the same trip to shop for themselves, this service does it all in one fell swoop...and isn't that a good thing?

And really, they'd have to shop for many, many people at once to make it worth it for them considering the time, effort, cost of gas, and cost of vehicle upkeep.

Yes. Before I had even looked to see what Yummy is, I wanted it. I generally manage to stifle these urges before they come to monetarily exchanged fruition.

However, yes--pretty packaging make me want things.

My dad makes this incredible burnt flour gravy. He adds mushrooms, onions, and at least one kind of meat to it--whatever we had on hand or left over. It's just amazing. It's a variation of the burnt flour gravy his father used to make for him when he was a kid during the Depression. It helped to stretch an FDR Alphabet Soup program paycheck (the CCC or WPA, probably) to cover a family of 11 back then. These days, I just try to talk my dad into making a huge batch of it whenever he visits.

Matilda:

Take heart--the $7.50 price tag has just as much to do with the cost of living/production for the area they were purchased in as the item itself. I procure the same standard of eggs for $3.75/dozen (or is it $3.50?) in a north Texas college town.

If you want eggs like this/produce like this, I'm sure we can put our heads together and figure out a viable solution. Didn't I read something recently about a chicken-share program? Or even a chicken CSA?

Loki--

I have a Lodge Color that also comes standard with a plastic knob. I ended up ordering a Le Creuset stainless steel knob for it. It works perfectly. A drawer pull could also work, but I managed to convince myself that there might be some sort of not-safe-for-high-temperature resin coating those knobs to keep them shiny. No, I have no proof. No, I don't think I was being particularly reasonable in this conjecture, but meh, that's how I work sometimes.

I would definitely make apple butter in this. I have a great oven recipe from a 1970s cookbook about preserving food. It's just apples, honey, and various yummy spices.

That sounds like the fundamental ingredients to the rice soup my Thai mother would make for me whenever I was sick. It's lovely with nam pla and an egg dropped in just before serving it.
