Lego and more lego (ok, Duplo Lego). Cars, especially if their doors can open and they can be put apart (they will be put apart in any case). Wooden blocks of any kind. Kitchen toy equipment. Sturdy books, books about the alphabet and numbers are a big fav. Trains. Puzzles... especially with cars and trains :-). For older toddlers: magnets (big magnets one cannot ingest).
>>> I have a 2 and half years old son, which, of course, preferes age inappropriate toys and does not particular care for teddy bears or dolls but sometime will cuddle one of the many he has received.

In the country where I live (Czech Republic) everyone goes shoes off indoor so it's a not an issue for me, fortunately :) In the country where I come from (Italy) it's more or less impolite to ask your guest to remove their shoes, often little squares of felts to put under your shoes are offered if outside the weather is bad (then one has to more or less skate instead of walk) but things are changing and the shoes off policy is getting more popular but I think most people behave like you do.

as most Italians, bread is the 'must' (aside when you are eating pizza, that's it). Of course we eat pasta (a lot of it) and rice (risotto or just boiled) but NEVER as a side dishes, they are 'first courses' (primi) like soups are.
... but since I live in the Czech Republic, I also started using white long grain rice as side of vegetables and eggs or meat and I like it very much. But I still eat lot of bread, Czech bread which is even better than Italian bread :)

Sygyzy mentions baking soda and that's the trick: add a little bit of baking soda and the onion will caramelize more quickly, because what's happening is not a real 'caramelization' but a Maillard reaction (proteins and sugars together) and it happens faster when the pH is basic, see this link (in Italian, I know, but there are pictures there):

I have a double bowl sink (a ceramic one from ikea) and an hanging dying rack hidden in the cabinet over the sink and it's ideal combination for me. I understand why a single big one (not cheap here around) can be practical (but I don't have many bigger items), but I woul'd miss enormously the second bowl for stacking soaped dishes while washing or for soaking salad or for thousand other things....

actually, another good reason to use real cork is to save the cork plantations in the Mediterranean region! they house a very diverse community of animals and other life forms and they, developers are just waiting to put their hands on them!

do you know that kinder is just one of the many sides of the gigantic Italian Ferrero, the same that produce Nutella and Tic Tac? I'm old enough to remember when they introduced the kinder egg to the market in 1974

I made a comment in 2008, got an answer in 2009, I read it now in 2010 and answer: you never misure 1/2 a liter of flour when cooking using the metric system: you weight 1/2 kilo of flour :) volume measures are used just for liquid like water and milk etc. Moreover, remember that 1 liter of water weight a kilogram, so you can weight it if you want to be more precise.

As a child I thought that white eggs existed just on tv or in Richard Scarry's books, since in Italy brown eggs are the norm (actually, I hadn't heard of blue chicken eggs till now). I confirm that in Italian the yolk is called the 'red' of egg (it's also called 'tuorlo'). Here in Czech Republic eggs used to be mostly white and the yolk is called the 'yellow' of the egg.

I concur about fresh egg pasta, also stuffed pasta like ravioli or panzerotti freeze very well and one can cook it without defreezing it first, which is always a plus.

In Hitchcock's vertigo Jimmy's Stewart friend (a painter/designer) had a great studio, Stewart's flat in the same movie was also good, although quite bigger if I remember well.
BTW: here you got my three absolute favorite films: rear window, the apartment and Jules & Jim
