I have to wonder about the "sustainability" catch phrase used by many product designers... sometimes I think people focus so much on the front end production, they forget, a more useful tool of creating product that lasts and can be handed down a generation, which trumps almost any % of green friendly factors in the making of it.

That said, I know any production depends on a number of factors and constraints. been in PD for almost 16 years and it is a daily struggle to balance the two.
