we're expecting our first in january and the closet in the nursery (of our rental home)has floor-to-ceiling shelves with no rod for hanging clothes, so we're making do with that. i like the idea of baskets or boxes with sizes/months labeled on them, that way what i'm using currently can go on the eye-level shelves and larger sizes can go up high where i can't easily reach. my favorite is cooked carrots. just chop 'em up, toss 'em in some water with a little sugar & a sprinkle of salt, and let boil - the longer the better. drain before serving & add a pat of butter... voila! Apartment Therapy The Kitchn | Five Ways to Eat: Carrots |

i second kathryn's suggestion above - wearing gloves to wash the dishes makes a huge difference. i have friends & family who think i'm crazy for wearing them, but i'll never give it up. Apartment Therapy The Kitchn | Winter Woes: Four Soothing Solutions for Dry Hands |

we keep multicolored christmas lights strung up all year, tucked up where the walls meet the ceiling. it gives off the perfect amount of cheery, warm light for evenings when you don't want to have bright lamps turned on. Apartment Therapy New York | Fairy Lights |

i'm partial to lattes because i really love the taste of warm milk. the sharpness of the espresso is a great complement. i used to be able to get them at a fancy-pants italian coffeeshop in the city (philly) where you were served the heated milk in a tall slender glass mug, along with a shot of espresso alongside in a small metal cup so you could pour it right into the milk. absolute heaven. question: were the cherries in question sour or regular? the sour cherries i've been finding this summer have a terrible taste but i've always worked under the assumption that regular cherries are no good for pie purposes. Apartment Therapy The Kitchn | Recipe: Back to Basics Cherry Pie |

strawberries, sour cream and brown sugar is one of my absolute favorite desserts. it doesn't sound that good but the taste is positively decadent. Apartment Therapy The Kitchn | Stay Cool! Favorite Quick, Easy, No-Bake Desserts |

i had this same issue and solved it by buying these very simple jewelry organizer boxes at organize.com - they're basically short plastic boxes lined with a velvety material and divided into sections. they stack easily and you can mix and match depending on how much of each type of jewelry you have. there's even long compartments for necklaces to be laid out flat so they don't get tangled. they fit nicely in regular dresser drawers and aren't too expensive. i have a set of parker bowls from crate & barrel (albeit a few years old) and they're great but for some reason i reach for every other bowl in my kitchen before i use them... i'm not sure why. i really, really wanted them and they are not nearly as useful as i had hoped. i've been using an electric mattress pad for years and i love it. they are pricey but worth it if you live somewhere cold orw ith insufficient insulation. electric blankets never made sense to me since, you know, heat rises - why not put the heat source underneath you where it can do the most good? @jmorey - i've never had the problem you describe but you might be able to find one a bit plusher if you're willing to splurge and spend a bit more. they are expensive but there are nights when they are also lifesavers! one or two individual oxtails make a nice addition to chicken stock, as well. i know some people have reservations about sullying their stock with another type of meat, but it does give a nice rich flavor. Apartment Therapy The Kitchn | Oxtail: What It Is, And What To Do With It |

i LOVE to decorate for halloween and for fall. i go as all-out as possible, and it's not for trick-or-treaters, it's just for me! fall-themed things (pumpkins, leaves, gourds) come out mid-september and stay out all the way through thanksgiving. halloween specific items (witches, ghosts, bats, etc) make their appearance october 1st and stay out all month. after thanksgiving all the fall stuff goes away and the winter stuff comes out - christmas stuff stays up through december, but other things like snowmen (and even strings of lights) can stay up until february or march. i can't figure out how you would get out the stockpot on the bottom tier. the support legs look too narrow to allow a pot to get in or out without turning it sideways & bumping the other pots and pans... which sort of defeats the purpose. my kitchen stuff is all red too! when i got married i registered for a red kitchen aid mixer (because i was obsessing over 'nigella bites' on the style network). consequently, all of our small appliances and many of my utensils, serving bowls & platters, and kitchen gadgets are now red. the red theme has gotten extended to other rooms because we have lived in some very small homes where it was better to have a unifying color. i love seasonal autumn beers! by far my favorite is dogfish head's 'punkin ale'. where i am (about an hour north of philly) most distributors get a few cases in and if you don't buy them when you see them by the time halloween rolls around they will be completely sold out! i have a few items that belonged to my grandmother and which i am fortunate to now have in my kitchen. a large stockpot, 3 matching blue-and-white mixing bowls, and two mini-muffin pans for a brownie/cupcake recipe of hers (written out in her handwriting on lined notebook paper). using these items makes me feel a real connection to my family and to all the little kitchen habits that have been handed down from my grandmother to my mother to me. i keep all my loose teabags in a basket shaped like a teapot that i picked up at a local store a few years ago (it was very cheap). the upside is that the basket is crazy cute; the downside is that it can be hard to find a specific type of tea when they're all jumbled together.
