SAME BOAT.... our mothers wanted a wedding, I was okay with a justice of the peace and a great honeymoon.... and now I'm frustratingly trying to plan this stuff out long distance, and broke.

I'm looking forward to seeing all of my friends and family meet my fiance's friends and family, having a big party to celebrate that we found each other, and I think a registry will be good for everyone, they don't know what my house looks like, or know that our dishes are from when my fiance was in college, or that our vacuum cleaner only *sort of* works... I'm looking forward to receiving things that are "OURS" and not castaways.

And I ALSO look forward to writing everyone thank you notes for taking the time out of their busy lives to wish us well and help make us a family and I will probably cry tears of gratitude the whole time.

I tried this and it turned to mush in my pot. :( I now have some more celery in the fridge and might try it again, I'm not sure exactly what I did wrong though.

mushrooms. olives. seafood. artichokes. eggplant. anchovies. LETTUCE. chains have started putting weeeeeeird things on their pizzas lately.

I make pizza at home, rarely ordering it anymore, and that way I get just the right amt of cheese, and a ton of sauce, and no greasey puddles! <3

Looks like I need to invest in some cute little ice cube trays, because this is a constant problem and I'm always so full after I finish my glass that I don't even WANT the rest of what's in the blender!

I appreciate this article, I've seen so many recipes with carob in them but haven't done the research on what exactly it is. Louisiana really isn't into low-fat/vegetarian/vegan/gf/dairy-free cooking(talk about frustrating!), but maybe WholeFoods carries them somewhere in their aisles :)

We have a vacuum sealer and that has been awesome. If I'm thinking ahead of time, I put the meat in the fridge on a plate to thaw, but if not, we fill up the clean side of our double sink with cold water and let it sit for a couple hours... hasn't posed a problem for us yet.

I've never had veal, and looked up some info about it when I glanced at Peawry's comment. So so sad, and totally unnecessary. :( We know that animals at least have some understanding of loss, I'm sure removing a calf from its mother isn't the greatest for the mothers well-being. Also, there's no check on whether farmers are using antibiotics solely for prevention of disease...

In other news....

bite-sized spanikopita sounds fantastic, it's on my list! I like to make a lot of lentil soup and freeze some, it freezes really well. I've got cauliflower fritters in the freezer, but haven't pulled any out yet. A hearty bolognese sauce is at the top of my list but Sundays are so lazy, walking from the living room to kitchen seems difficult.

I wouldn't paint my ceiling that color, maybe something a little more soothing, but the looks is awesome, I love that they brought the color down the walls a bit, and it works well with the cement walls!

I disagree with this article and agree with everyone who commented on it. I wasn't aware that people believed organic foods were more nutritious, that's not the reason I buy them. I'm more concerned with what is in or on my food that SHOULDN'T be there, and the way the food is raised and farmed. People are going to begin doubting the reasons they buy organic in the first place because "the NYTimes says so". This annoys me so much.

This post makes me cringe. I have never traveled outside the US but have great dreams to do so....however, nausea and stomach upsets are my worst nightmare and we're going out of the country for our honeymoon next year. Makes me want to pack my suitcase full of pre-washed fruits&veggies and snackable items!!!!!

@Emmi:

so many doctors are paid off by pharmaceutical companies to prescribe their drugs to people who otherwise just need a little exercise and some food choice changes.... and not to mention the government still has the "food pyramid" in effect... who still thinks that bagels and pasta are what you should be eating the most of during your day?

I say, do a lot of research. a lot of people post great foodie websites in their comments on TheKitchn, which lead to other great foodie websites and then to clean eating websites. I got a juicer because of this site and the subsequent sites I found through comments and weekly postings.. It's magical, and was only $100. I check out the websites, see what I like about them, think very consciously about what they're saying, discard the info if I think it seems a little hokey, and honestly, what I've taken from all my "online research" is that veggies are one of the most important things for your body. Fruits are excellent but have more sugar, and water is essential, even if you're getting alot of water from the fruits and veggies you're eating.... I still eat bacon cheeseburgers, but only when I go out to eat, which is maybe once a month? At home it's more pork and chicken, and pizza with way more veggies than anything else as toppings.

Just be conscious of what you're eating, and what you're reading, and think really hard about how the foods you're eating make you feel. Listen to your gut.... literally :)

I like to take a salad for lunch, in a 4cup container. I stock it with chickpeas, red peppers, cucumbers, and lettuce. No cheese. No croutons. Sometimes other leftover veggies. My snack at work in the morning is an apple cut up into a billion pieces, and that way I feel like I'm constantly eating but it's really not that much. I try to walk the dog, FAST, for an hour every day, even if I don't feel like it, because I always feel better afterwards!

You don't have to do anything drastic, just try to be conscious of what your eating, eat a lot of veggies or fruits that are mostly water: Cucumber, celery, melons, and eat some with fiber, too: bananas, apples, celery (again)... I have found that as I eat more veggies and fruits, I tend to want less sweet or heavy things, and more food that makes my body feel *clean*.

Also, have your coffee or tea, but drink mostly water, and water with lemon juice. Have your cocktails or wine every once in awhile, get rid of the soda, it never did anyone any good.

I practiced yoga for a bit (getting to classes doesn't work with my schedule right now) and it really got me thinking about my body, what I put into it, how to make myself feel less stressed and just overall BETTER...It's good for people like me who hate running or don't know the first thing about gym machines! Also, I actually have a defined waist for the first time EVER! (side benefit!)

*** Eat fruits, eat veggies, drink water, walk fast, eat smaller portions of what you want, make smaller portions of things if you don't like leftovers, freeze cookie dough to portion out a couple cookies when you have cravings.

GOOD LUCK! :)

I'm getting married next year and we recently did our registry. I moved into the fiance's house he's had since college, and use most of the plates/utensils he's had since then as well (going on 12 years old a lot of this stuff).. I honestly appreciate having a house and baking equipment to use, but REALLY want I'd like is NEW. Things that we received together as a newly married couple that we can use for years and years that are OURS. We cannot afford a stand mixer or food processor on our own at this moment, but I keep a list of recipes I'd like to try that use those particular appliances for once we receive them. It FEELS like we're over-registering for things, but if I were a guest, I would appreciate a little direction. If people would rather give us money, they will be financially helping with our honeymoon, or expenses that come up after the wedding, and that is greatly appreciated as well.

As a guest at weddings, I appreciate registries because though we might be friends, one doesn't always know what that couple might secretly be pining for or NEED in their house that they don't offhandedly mention to you.

Even though we're already registered 3 places, I'm definitely going to check out MyRegistry, because unique serving dishes and good baking equipment and good cutting boards ARE NOT dept stores strong suits!!! (Why is everything "Martha Stewart" brand? She creeps me out.) We might change everything to one site instead! hooray.

I hate watching news on the TV, it never seems like anything good is happening in the world. I listen to NPR on my way to and from work (after swearing up and down that I would not end up like my parents listening to "boring TALK radio") and I feel sufficiently up to speed with problems in the world and in my town& state, as well as hearing little interesting stories and GOOD things that are happening as well. We don't receive the paper but I go to the NYTimes.com every once in awhile and catch myself up to speed.

It's hard to be bombarded by everything all the time, you never have enough time to mull things over and come up with your own opinions because the world is trying to give you an opinion every second. It's exhausting, really.

My parents were fairly strict with us as children, never any soda in the house, not too many junk foods (until we were teens), I remember not even TRYING chips until I was about 8 or 9. When I finally did drink soda, the carbonation was way too much for my stomach even though I liked the taste. Even today beer and soda is very heavy in my stomach, I don't drink it often, if at all. I definitely credit my parents on my adult healthy eating choices and will choose water over anything else. I bring water with lemon every morning to work but if I'm out I don't put lemon in, you never know if they've washed it before putting it in your glass. :(

Makes me shake my head when people drink soda and complain about their weight. There's is so much scientific knowledge out there, easy to acquire, that can help one take control of their health in whatever way they want.
