When my Aunt & Uncle lived in FL we would send them a box of leaves that had fallen from our trees each fall. My Aunt would burn a small pile of them to recreate a Midwestern smell. Even in the heat, it made her feel the change of season.

I think taking out the fireplace would be very drastic. The sofa doesn't have to sit against the wall. I like the idea of the sofa facing the fireplace with a sofa table behind it. I like the idea of creating an entry space like lili09 suggests.

Happy Lucia! God Jul! My family just got back from the Santa Lucia procession here in Chicago. Our Lucia was brunette and chosen by a name draw from a hat around lunch time. She also wore real candles! It's a great celebration!

Hmmmm.... Fabric & starch. I hadn't thought of that! I was thinking about covering mine too (also a rental) and was looking at Blik wallpapers (decals, whatever they call them). Now I may go the fabric route though! It's probably cheaper.

I keep seeing the YHL references too... I think the idea of design is that it is never really original but always inspired. YHL wasn't the first to paint a bookshelf nor will this be the last. I love seeing how color changes the overall effect of the bookcase. This tone really warms it up! It's a great way to add color without a huge commitment.

My 6yo son learns Mandarin in school (I, however, do not know any) and they use a product called Chinese Paradise. I am considering using it at home with him and have found it online. It is reasonably priced although it is for older learners (I think the age on it says 10-12). From our experience with him it has helped to have a teacher that is a native speaker as well as knowing other kids who are at the same level. Maybe by working slowly to introduce it and finding others that are interested in teaching their children as well. Good luck!

With all the build up and marketing Target did, this shouldn't have been shocking. I'm not into Missoni, but I have loved from the past brandings they have done. I bought the Orla Kiely canisters on clearance all three for the original price of the large one. I figure if I need it, then it will be there and if it isn't, I didn't need it any way.

Really? This is really what life has come to? Paying off people for when kids are, well, being kids? I agree with Supergaijin.

Have my kids been terrible in public? Yes, it's been known to happen. I've also seen adults behaving badly, but they aren't handing out candies and apologies.

At about a year, my son fell asleep while playing in the sand at a resort. He was on my lap when my husband said "Hey, He's asleep!" we laid him out on a lounge chair and enjoyed a quiet margarita!

Who has the time to digitally archive all of a kids work? Not me! I have a inexpensive portfolio for each of my kids and a mailer tube for larger things. I just plop them in and then at the end of the school year I go through them for the keepers.

I love this post and all of your art history posts, but there is not indication on where you get your information from other than image sources.

I would like to point out that Mama Pickles has a disclaimer on it... You probably should work with an OT to ensure you are making it the correct weight. My autistic son has many adverse reactions to weighted things... Just because a person may have autism, doesn't mean this would necessarily work for that person.

I used one when living in Denver and redoing a living room. We didn't have a ton of stuff, but more than we could bear taking away ourselves and definitely didn't want to put in the dumpster. It was perfect and fit more than we thought it would. We would use one again. I would just recommend that it is located in a space that could get a fairly large truck to get it. I am not sure our current alley in Chicago could handle it.

We like Ispy around our house... there are some for older kids, but there also Ispy board books and some of the beginning readers. Also, any type of beginning dictionary.

If you are looking for more of a story book, one of the most popular at our house is Arnie the Donut. I warn you, you'll want a donut afterward or a donut pet :)

We used a realtor. She didn't charge us anything, but we would have gladly paid as her service made it so easy for us! We had only a week as well and found that most landlords in Chicago didn't want to work further out as most places were empty. A friend also has good luck with a apartment locating service. I think you have great perameters to have someone else do the work for you and then only go see apts that make the grade.

I don't recommend crayons on a plane, opt instead of the magnet drawing board. We once were on a flight and my eldest son, three at the time, dropped all his crayons and they rolled to the back of the plane. Ugh.

I like the idea of the pipe cleaners and cotton balls!

We always do books, the iPhone or iPod, a DVD player (not so much now that we have iphones), snacks, cars, and some surprises.
